PANews reported on November 19th that, according to Reuters, Malaysia's national electricity company TNB stated that it suffered losses of approximately US$1.1 billion (about RM4.6 billion) due to illegal electricity use for cryptocurrency mining between 2020 and August of this year. Official disclosures revealed that 13,827 suspected electricity theft sites were uncovered, involving tampering with electricity meters and unauthorized wiring, which are violations under the Electricity Supply Act. TNB has collaborated with the police, communications regulators, and anti-corruption agencies to seize Bitcoin mining equipment and establish a database of property owners and tenants involved in the cases for monitoring and enforcement; simultaneously, smart meters have been deployed in substations to detect abnormal energy consumption in real time.
