Claude Opus 4.5 Beats OpenAI and Google in Coding Competition

TLDR

  • Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.5 on November 24, 2025, marking its third major AI model launch in two months
  • The model outperforms competitors including Google’s Gemini 3 Pro and OpenAI’s GPT-5.1 on software engineering tests
  • Microsoft and Nvidia recently invested billions in Anthropic, bringing the company’s valuation to approximately $350 billion
  • Claude Opus 4.5 scored higher than any human candidate on Anthropic’s difficult performance engineering exam
  • New features include Claude for Chrome expansion, Claude for Excel general availability, and Claude Code desktop integration

Anthropic announced the release of Claude Opus 4.5 on Monday, November 24, 2025. The AI startup launched its latest model following two other releases in recent months.

The company unveiled Claude Sonnet 4.5 in late September and Claude Haiku 4.5 in October. Scott White, product leader for Claude.ai at Anthropic, spoke about the rapid development pace in an interview with CNBC.

Claude Opus 4.5 targets professional software developers and knowledge workers such as financial analysts, consultants, and accountants. The model handles coding, computer use, and complex enterprise tasks according to the company.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers and executives. Last week, Microsoft and Nvidia announced multi-billion-dollar investments in the startup. These investments raised Anthropic’s valuation to around $350 billion.

Performance on Technical Tests

The new model achieved state-of-the-art results on SWE-bench Verified, a test measuring AI software coding abilities. Claude Opus 4.5 outperformed Google’s Gemini 3 Pro and OpenAI’s GPT-5.1 on this benchmark.

Anthropic tested the model on its internal performance engineering exam given to job candidates. Within a two-hour time limit, Claude Opus 4.5 scored higher than any human candidate in the company’s history.

The model showed improvements in everyday tasks including spreadsheet work, slide preparation, and research. Anthropic describes these capabilities as “meaningfully better” than previous versions.

The company’s internal testers reported consistent feedback about the model. They noted Claude Opus 4.5 handles ambiguity and reasons about tradeoffs independently. Testers said the model solves complex multi-system bugs effectively.

Pricing and Availability

Claude Opus 4.5 is now available through Anthropic’s apps, API, and three major cloud platforms. Developers can access it using the model string claude-opus-4-5-20251101. The pricing is set at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.

The model serves as the default option for Anthropic’s Pro, Max, and Enterprise offerings. The company removed Opus-specific usage caps for users with access to the new model.

Additional Product Updates

Anthropic expanded Claude for Chrome to all Max users on Monday. The browser extension allows Claude to take actions across multiple browser tabs.

Claude for Excel reached general availability for Max, Team, and Enterprise users. The feature enables the AI to understand and edit spreadsheets directly.

The company also added Claude Code to its desktop application. This allows users to run multiple local and remote sessions simultaneously. Plan Mode within Claude Code now builds more detailed plans and asks clarifying questions before execution.

Long conversations in Claude apps no longer hit message limits. The system automatically summarizes earlier context to maintain continuous discussions.
