TLDR

  • Peter Thiel’s fund sold 208,000 Tesla shares worth $72 million and completely exited its 538,000-share Nvidia position worth $94 million during Q3 2025.
  • Thiel purchased 79,000 Apple shares and 49,000 Microsoft shares, investing approximately $43 million combined.
  • The sales generated $166 million while purchases totaled $43 million, leaving Thiel with substantial cash reserves after Q3 transactions.
  • The portfolio shift moves away from high-growth stocks Tesla and Nvidia toward more stable tech giants Apple and Microsoft.
  • Nvidia trades at similar forward earnings valuations to Apple despite showing much stronger revenue growth rates.

Peter Thiel, the billionaire investor and PayPal co-founder, made major changes to his stock portfolio during the third quarter of 2025. His fund sold large positions in Tesla and Nvidia while buying shares of Apple and Microsoft.

The moves represent a shift in investment strategy for one of tech’s most watched investors. Thiel was an early Facebook investor and co-founded both PayPal and Palantir Technologies.

During Q3, Thiel’s fund sold approximately 208,000 shares of Tesla. Based on the stock’s average trading price of $347 during the quarter, this sale was worth around $72 million.

The fund also completely exited its Nvidia position. Thiel sold all 538,000 shares of the chip maker during the quarter.

Using Nvidia’s average Q3 trading price of $174, the total sale was worth approximately $94 million. This means Thiel cleared roughly $166 million from both stock sales combined.

New Positions in Apple and Microsoft

Thiel used some of the proceeds to establish new positions in two different tech giants. The fund purchased 79,000 shares of Apple during Q3.

The fund also bought 49,000 shares of Microsoft. Combined, these two purchases cost approximately $43 million based on average Q3 stock prices.

The difference between money raised from sales and money spent on purchases is clear. Thiel generated $166 million from selling Tesla and Nvidia but spent only $43 million on Apple and Microsoft.

This leaves the fund holding over $120 million in cash from these transactions. The cash could be used for future investments or may indicate caution about current market valuations.

Comparing Growth Rates and Valuations

The portfolio changes show a move toward lower-risk investments. Apple and Microsoft are mature companies with stable business models and consistent cash flows.

Tesla and Nvidia, by contrast, are higher-growth companies with more volatile stock prices. This shift suggests a more defensive investment approach.

The decision to sell Nvidia for Apple raises questions about growth priorities. Nvidia has posted explosive revenue growth driven by demand for AI chips.

Apple’s revenue growth has been under 10% annually for several years. Despite this difference, both companies trade at similar forward price-to-earnings ratios.

Nvidia’s forward P/E ratio stands near Apple’s level even though Nvidia’s revenue growth rate is much higher. This valuation similarity exists despite their very different growth trajectories.

Tesla stock traded between $294 and $445 during Q3 2025. Nvidia shares traded in a range from $153 to $187 during the same period.
