TLDR

  • German drone maker Quantum Systems raised €180 million in Series C extension, tripling its valuation to €3 billion ($3.47 billion)
  • Peter Thiel’s Thiel Capital continues backing the company after investing in 2023 Series B round
  • Total funding raised in 2025 reaches €340 million, the largest private capital raise in Europe’s dual-use sector
  • Company develops AI-powered drones for military and civilian use, with platforms deployed by NATO forces in Ukraine since 2022
  • Quantum Systems plans to expand from air drones into land and sea domains while pursuing strategic acquisitions

German drone manufacturer Quantum Systems announced on Thursday it secured €180 million in a Series C extension funding round. The investment brings the company’s valuation to €3 billion, roughly $3.47 billion in US dollars.

The latest funding round was led by Balderton Capital. This marks the company’s second major raise in 2025, following a €160 million Series C in May.

The total amount raised this year now stands at €340 million. This represents the largest private capital raise in Europe’s dual-use technology sector for 2025.

Peter Thiel’s investment firm, Thiel Capital, remains a backer of the company. The Silicon Valley billionaire first invested through Thiel Capital during Quantum Systems’ Series B round in 2023.

Thiel, who founded Palantir Technologies, stated in 2022 that unmanned aircraft systems’ future lies in combining software and hardware. He described Quantum Systems as ahead of its competition.

The company was founded in 2015 by Florian Seibel, a German army officer who serves as co-CEO. Quantum Systems initially focused on aerial drones and AI-powered surveillance software.

The start-up first achieved unicorn status in May 2025 when its valuation reached €1 billion. The company has now tripled that valuation in just six months.

Expansion Plans and Acquisitions

Quantum Systems employs up to 1,000 people across multiple countries. The company has offices in Germany, Ukraine, the United States, Australia, Romania, the United Kingdom, and the Baltic states.

The company has already completed several acquisitions this year. These include AirRobot, Nordic Unmanned, and Spleenlab.

The new capital will fund additional strategic acquisitions. Quantum Systems plans to strengthen its multi-domain offerings across air, land, and maritime applications.

NATO Deployment and Military Use

The company’s drones serve both government and civilian purposes. Agricultural applications represent one civilian use case for the technology.

Quantum Systems’ platforms are currently deployed by NATO forces. The drones operate across Europe, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.

The company’s fleet has been operating in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022. This represents the most prominent deployment of Quantum Systems’ technology.

Seibel created a separate company called Stark to deliver attack drones. The company’s mission software, MOSAIC UXS, connects operations across multiple domains.

Rana Yared, General Partner at Balderton Capital, stated the investment supports European sovereignty in defense technology. Yared cited rising geopolitical instability and shifting security priorities as factors driving demand for European innovation.

The company’s €340 million raise in 2025 exceeds the combined funding of other European unmanned systems companies. Switzerland’s General Intuition raised €114 million, while Poland’s Orbotix secured €6.5 million for autonomous defense drones.

The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For

The post The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Visions of future technology are often prescient about the broad strokes while flubbing the details. The tablets in “2001: A Space Odyssey” do indeed look like iPads, but you never see the astronauts paying for subscriptions or wasting hours on Candy Crush.  Channel factories are one vision that arose early in the history of the Lightning Network to address some challenges that Lightning has faced from the beginning. Despite having grown to become Bitcoin’s most successful layer-2 scaling solution, with instant and low-fee payments, Lightning’s scale is limited by its reliance on payment channels. Although Lightning shifts most transactions off-chain, each payment channel still requires an on-chain transaction to open and (usually) another to close. As adoption grows, pressure on the blockchain grows with it. The need for a more scalable approach to managing channels is clear. Channel factories were supposed to meet this need, but where are they? In 2025, subnetworks are emerging that revive the impetus of channel factories with some new details that vastly increase their potential. They are natively interoperable with Lightning and achieve greater scale by allowing a group of participants to open a shared multisig UTXO and create multiple bilateral channels, which reduces the number of on-chain transactions and improves capital efficiency. Achieving greater scale by reducing complexity, Ark and Spark perform the same function as traditional channel factories with new designs and additional capabilities based on shared UTXOs.  Channel Factories 101 Channel factories have been around since the inception of Lightning. A factory is a multiparty contract where multiple users (not just two, as in a Dryja-Poon channel) cooperatively lock funds in a single multisig UTXO. They can open, close and update channels off-chain without updating the blockchain for each operation. Only when participants leave or the factory dissolves is an on-chain transaction…
