Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso will go all out in attack against Girona, and look to make up ground on current La Liga leaders FC Barcelona by taking all three points from Montilivi.
After bullying the latter mentioned Catalans in El Clasico a month ago and opening up a comfortable lead at the summit of the Spanish top flight, Madrid have since faltered with back-to-back domestic draws amid a loss to Liverpool and comeback win over Olympiacos in the Champions League.
A trip to Barca’s regional neighbours on Sunday evening is important to cut a two-point lead Flick’s men have achieved with wins over Athletic Club and Alaves in consecutive weekends at Camp Nou, and this fixture in particular comes ahead of a tough trip to Bilbao on Tuesday evening brought forward because of the Spanish Super Cup.
As always, Thibaut Courtois will be Alonso’s goalkeeper, and he is protected by a back line of Alvaro Carreras, Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao and a Trent Alexander-Arnold who joined in the summer from the coach’s former playing-days club Liverpool and is starting to string starting apperances together following a successful recovery from injury.
In the midfield, Aurelien Tchouameni is the brains and muscle behind a midfield two of Fede Valverde and Arda Guler.
Jude Bellingham is the most advanced of the midfielders as a CAM, and has just a pairing of Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe in front of him that are starting to click in unison while exhibiting top form.
What Real Madrid coach Alonso said
“After the last Champions League game in Athens, we know that this is one in which we need the sensations of winning away from home. It has been curious that in the calendar there have been so many away games consecutively. We have been joined by the Champions League and La Liga, but we need a win to continue adding three points at a time if we want to stay up there. That is the objective. The team is good, we recover people and we arrive in better condition.”
“We need continuity. We played good phases of the game, but we lacked a well-rounded game, in which we felt that dominance, control, security and conviction in the game. In the defensive phase we have been growing; I’m not very happy with anything we can improve, especially the goals conceded in the last few games. We’re going to do better. With the ball we are also in the improvement phase; we are under construction and that is the way.”
