Christy, a sports biopic starring Sydney Sweeney as real-life female boxing icon Christy Martin, is new on digital streaming.
Christy opened in theaters nationwide on Nov. 7. The official synopsis for the movie reads, “Christy Martin (Sweeney) never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia — until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster).
“But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it — confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death. Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life.”
Directed by David Michôd and produced by Sweeney, Christy also stars Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Jess Gabor, Coleman Pedigo, Tony Cavelero, Brian Hibbard and Ethan Embry.
Christy arrived on digital streaming on premium video on demand on Tuesday and is available on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube Movies & TV. The film can be purchased on digital for $19.99 or can be rented for $14.99 for a 48-hour period.
Sydney Sweeney Physically Transformed To Play Christy Martin
Sydney Sweeney went the distance to become Christy Martin by gaining 35 pounds and training with a dialect coach to master the real-life boxer’s West Virginian accent, according to The Hollywood Reporter. On top of that, THR noted, the actor wore brown contact lenses and brunette wigs to further alter her looks for the film.
“When I looked in the mirror for the first time, I was like, ‘Whoa.’ I didn’t even recognize myself,” Sweeney told THR. “As an actor, I dream of being able to have roles like that where I get to lose myself completely, and I was able to do that with Christy.”
Christy to date has earned a 67% “fresh” critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 186 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “While Christy falters in tonal cohesion and emotional impact, it remains a compelling showcase for Sydney Sweeney’s transformative performance, grounding a mythic genre in raw, personal storytelling.
In addition, the film earned a 96% “fresh” score on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 100-plus verified user ratings. The RT audience summary reads, “A gritty and honest portrayal of Christy Martin’s true-life story, Sydney Sweeney delivers a knockout performance in this empowering biopic.”
During the film’s limited run in theaters, Christy $1.952 million domestically and more than $137,000 internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $2.09 million. Christy had a production budget of $15 million before prints and advertising costs, according to IndieWire.
