In the rapidly evolving landscape of blockchain technologies, the need for solutions that combine ease of launch with full sovereignty is increasingly felt.

Canopy, a company dedicated to developing a next-generation framework for Layer 1 (L1), has introduced Progressive Autonomy, an innovative model that promises to radically transform the way blockchains are created and managed.

Progressive Autonomy: the Solution to the Dilemma Between Simplicity and Sovereignty

Traditionally, teams looking to launch a blockchain face a tough choice: opting for the ease of implementation offered by Layer 2 (L2) rollups, while sacrificing full autonomy and the ability to retain generated value, or tackling the complexity and high costs required to build a sovereign L1.

This situation has often forced developers into disadvantageous compromises. With Progressive Autonomy, Canopy eliminates this dichotomy.

The new model allows teams to quickly launch a sub-chain protected by Canopy’s validator network, customize their blockchain as it grows, and, when ready, migrate to an independent L1 without having to rewrite the infrastructure or raise additional budgets for security.

Shared Security and Unprecedented Flexibility

One of the key elements of Progressive Autonomy is shared security. All chains launched on Canopy benefit from the protection offered by a network of professional validators, already active on the platform’s Betanet and composed of over 20 leading operators.

This approach allows new projects to be secure from day one, without having to resort to mechanisms such as token inflation or external security markets.

The sharing of validators eliminates the need for early-stage projects to create and incentivize their own set of validators, thereby reducing both launch times and operational complexity.

Moreover, Canopy’s VM-free architecture allows developers to use any programming language and tailor the execution environment to the application’s needs, without having to intervene in the consensus or modify the underlying network.

From Launch to Full Independence: A Seamless Journey

When a project reaches the desired maturity, it can separate from the shared security of Canopy and become a fully sovereign L1, bringing with it its own history, state, community, and economy.

This upgrade path ensures continuity for both users and developers, while simultaneously offering full control over governance, performance, and value capture.

According to Adam Liposky, CEO of Canopy, “teams were forced to choose between simplicity and sovereignty. With Canopy, we have eliminated this compromise. Sovereignty must mean that developers control the economy of their own network and can retain the value generated. Progressive Autonomy allows for rapid launch, long-term ownership, and the construction of a future made up of hundreds of specialized sub-chains, owned by their respective communities.”

A Structural Shift for the Blockchain Ecosystem

The Canopy proposal represents a true structural shift for the sector. Instead of having to choose from the outset between an L1 or an L2, teams can now naturally evolve from an incubation phase to full independence, following their own growth needs.

Andrew Nguyen, co-founder and CTO of Canopy, emphasizes: “Progressive Autonomy allows developers to focus solely on creating useful and high-performance applications without worrying about the infrastructure. Our goal was to make the burdens related to security and operational aspects typical of creating an L1 invisible. When sovereignty becomes accessible, the entire ecosystem benefits.”

An Active Betanet and an Upcoming Mainnet

The Canopy Betanet is already operational and supported by prominent validators such as PierTwo, Stakely, Rhino, Lavender Five, Nodes.Guru, Kingnode, Easy2Stake, and others, demonstrating the growing interest in the shared security approach.

The mainnet launch is scheduled for 2026, following over 18 months of development dedicated to both the core protocol and support infrastructures.

Canopy Network: Simplicity, Interoperability, and Security

At the core of Canopy’s vision is the desire to make launching a sovereign blockchain as simple as creating an application.

Teams can deploy in just a few days, maintain control over their network’s economy, and connect to other chains without the need for bridges or “wrapped” assets. Thanks to NestBFT and the layerless mesh security, Canopy offers shared protection and integrated atomic swaps for every chain on the network.

Developers benefit from predictable costs, rapid launch templates, and interoperability from day one, elements that make Canopy an ideal solution for those looking to innovate without technical or financial barriers.

Towards a Future of Sovereign and Specialized Blockchains

The Progressive Autonomy model proposed by Canopy aims to redefine industry standards, breaking down the barriers that have so far limited the spread of truly sovereign and specialized blockchains.

With a unique combination of shared security, flexibility, and a seamless growth path, Canopy offers developers and communities the opportunity to build and own their digital future without compromise.

UK crypto holders brace for FCA’s expanded regulatory reach

The post UK crypto holders brace for FCA’s expanded regulatory reach appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. British crypto holders may soon face a very different landscape as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) moves to expand its regulatory reach in the industry. A new consultation paper outlines how the watchdog intends to apply its rulebook to crypto firms, shaping everything from asset safeguarding to trading platform operation. According to the financial regulator, these proposals would translate into clearer protections for retail investors and stricter oversight of crypto firms. UK FCA plans Until now, UK crypto users mostly encountered the FCA through rules on promotions and anti-money laundering checks. The consultation paper goes much further. It proposes direct oversight of stablecoin issuers, custodians, and crypto-asset trading platforms (CATPs). For investors, that means the wallets, exchanges, and coins they rely on could soon be subject to the same governance and resilience standards as traditional financial institutions. The regulator has also clarified that firms need official authorization before serving customers. This condition should, in theory, reduce the risk of sudden platform failures or unclear accountability. David Geale, the FCA’s executive director of payments and digital finance, said the proposals are designed to strike a balance between innovation and protection. He explained: “We want to develop a sustainable and competitive crypto sector – balancing innovation, market integrity and trust.” Geale noted that while the rules will not eliminate investment risks, they will create consistent standards, helping consumers understand what to expect from registered firms. Why does this matter for crypto holders? The UK regulatory framework shift would provide safer custody of assets, better disclosure of risks, and clearer recourse if something goes wrong. However, the regulator was also frank in its submission, arguing that no rulebook can eliminate the volatility or inherent risks of holding digital assets. Instead, the focus is on ensuring that when consumers choose to invest, they do…
