President Donald Trump told Republican lawmakers on Tuesday he expects Democrats to impeach him if his party loses control of Congress in the November midterm elections.
Speaking at a House Republican retreat in Washington, Trump said Democrats would find reasons to impeach him if Republicans fail to win. The president’s approval rating has dropped to 42% as voters express frustration over the cost of living.
Current polls show Democrats leading in midterm races. Prediction market Polymarket gives Democrats nearly 80% odds of winning the House.
All 435 House seats and one-third of Senate seats face election in November. Republicans currently control the House by just five votes.
Trump was impeached twice during his first term in office. The first impeachment in 2019 involved charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress over his dealings with Ukraine.
His second impeachment came in January 2021 after the Capitol attack on January 6 of that year. The Senate acquitted him in both cases.
Several Democrats have already introduced impeachment articles against Trump in his second term. Representative Sean Casten and Senator Jon Ossoff have stated Trump should face impeachment over his crypto dealings.
These dealings included hosting a private dinner for top holders of his memecoin. The White House denies allegations of abuse of power.
A Democratic-controlled House could block Trump’s legislative agenda. Key crypto legislation at risk includes the market structure bill that would establish regulatory frameworks for the sector.
Senate Banking Committee Chair Tim Scott said the crypto bill is scheduled for another vote on Thursday next week. Republicans have pushed to pass the legislation before the midterms.
Trump faces resistance even within his own party. Last year, conservative Republicans blocked crypto bills unless a central bank digital currency ban was added.
Republican leaders struck a deal to include a CBDC ban in a defense bill. However, they passed the defense funding bill without the CBDC ban, angering party members.
Trump spent 84 minutes addressing Republican lawmakers at the retreat. He urged them to put aside differences and focus on issues like healthcare and election integrity.
The president told conservative members to be “a little flexible” on certain policy positions. He warned that internal divisions could hurt Republican chances in November.
Polymarket gives Republicans a 67% chance of keeping Senate control. The Senate could acquit Trump again if he faces a third impeachment.
