MANILA, Philippines – Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Rappler CEO Maria Ressa is set to speak at the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists‘ announcement of the 2026 “Doomsday Clock” on January 27.
Introduced in 1947, the Doomsday Clock is a metaphorical clock that warns the public how close the world is to destruction based on risks such as nuclear threats, climate change, and disruptive technologies that threaten humanity.
The closer to midnight, the closer it is to “doomsday.” In 2025, the hands of the clock were moved to 89 seconds before midnight, citing war conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as extreme climate and health conditions felt worldwide.
The clock shows “how close humanity is to destroying itself,” the event organizers said in an Instagram post.
Ressa will join various Bulletin-member professors and scholars in the field of science and public affairs to discuss the driving factors for the clock’s movement this year.
