Lady Gaga Misses Her First No. 1 On One Major Chart By A Single Space

Since dropping “Die With a Smile” back in mid-2024, both Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars have moved on to other songs and new eras. Gaga returned to her dark dance-pop roots with Mayhem, which was powered by singles like “Disease” and “Abracadabra.”

At the same time, Mars scored one of the most successful K-pop tunes of all time alongside Blackpink star Rosé, and may win new Grammys as “Apt.” is currently up for several prizes. Mars also just announced an upcoming album titled The Romantic, which is scheduled to arrive in late February, and which has already produced the single “I Just Might.”

While both Gaga and Mars have dropped plenty of new music since “Die With a Smile,” Americans have not forgotten the track. This week, the vintage duet returns to its all-time high on one chart and nearly earns both superstars another No. 1.

“Die With a Smile” Misses No. 1 by One Space

“Die With a Smile” inches north one space on the Adult Contemporary chart, one of three pop radio rankings published by Billboard every period. The cut advances to No. 2, which stands as its all-time high point. “Die with a Smile” previously landed in that spot back in May of 2025.

“Die With a Smile” Returns to Its All-Time High

It’s unusual that “Die With a Smile” is still growing after being out in the world for a year and a half, but among all Billboard charts, the Adult Contemporary list is known to move incredibly slowly. “Die With a Smile” finds its way back to the runner-up space, its peak, 73 weeks into its tenure on the tally.

Benson Boone, Shaboozey, Billie Eilish and Teddy Swims

“Die With a Smile” is not the only cut that’s been around a while that continues to perform well on the Adult Contemporary chart. More than half of all the songs present inside the list’s top 10 — a roundup including “Lose Control” by Teddy Swims, “Beautiful Things” by Benson Boone, “Stargazing” by Myles Smith, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” from Shaboozey, and “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish — have all racked up at least a year on the ranking.

Lady Gaga Matches Her Previous Career High

Gaga returns to her career high point as “Die With a Smile” hits No. 2. The collaboration is once again tied with her Oscar-winning A Star Is Born cut “Shallow,” which also missed out on ruling by just one space.

Bruno Mars Aiming for a Third Adult Contemporary No. 1

Mars, on the other hand, has already collected a pair of winners on the Adult Contemporary chart, and he may soon claim a third. “Just the Way You Are” reached the top spot in February 2011 and went on to lead the charge for an incredible 20 frames. “Just the Way You Are,” which helped introduce Mars to the general public a decade and a half ago, is still counted among the longest-running No. 1s in the tally’s history. Just a few years later, “When I Was Your Man” shot to the penthouse and, after only a few months on the list, dominated for two stints.

Alex Warren Owns the No. 1 Space With “Ordinary”

The current edition of the Adult Contemporary chart is ruled by Alex Warren’s “Ordinary.” The Grammy nominee’s breakout hit is steady in first place as it leads for an eleventh turn.

“Die With a Smile” Slips on the Streaming Chart

In addition to the Adult Contemporary chart, “Die With a Smile” also takes up space on one other American ranking, the Streaming Songs list. This time around, the Grammy-winning smash falls two spaces to No. 45.

“Die With a Smile” Misses the Top 10 Globally by One Spot

“Die With a Smile” can also be found on both of Billboard’s worldwide rosters, and coincidentally, it sits in the same spot on the pair. “Die With a Smile” lands at No. 11 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S., although it experiences a different journey to that position.

Gaga and Mars climb one spot on the Billboard Global 200 and almost return to the uppermost tier, while on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. — which is compiled in almost the same manner as the Billboard Global 200, except streams and sales from American consumers are completely left out of its methodology — the song slips outside the top 10, declining from No. 9 to No. 11. Unlike on the Adult Contemporary roster, “Die With a Smile” has already hit No. 1 on the other three Billboard charts on which it can be found.
