Taylor Swift Joins Adele And Whitney Houston In A Historic Chart Feat

Taylor Swift follows Whitney Houston, Santana, Adele and Morgan Wallen as “The Fate of Ophelia” hits 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100, becoming her first song to lead that long. Throughout the majority of the past several months, Taylor Swift has lived at No. 1 on Billboard’s two most important charts, the Hot 100 and the Billboard 200. The first of those rankings looks only at the most-consumed songs in the United States, while the latter operates in a similar manner, only for albums and EPs.

Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl and its lead single, “The Fate of Ophelia,” debuted at No. 1 the moment they could and have largely – but not completely – been running the show ever since. The Life of a Showgirl might not rule this time around on the Billboard 200, but as “The Fate of Ophelia” earns another stint in first place on the Hot 100, Swift manages a career first and matches several of the biggest musical stars of all time.

“The Fate of Ophelia” Marks Taylor Swift’s First 10-Week No. 1

“The Fate of Ophelia” holds at No. 1 on the Hot 100, earning its tenth stay on the competitive tally. The single marks the first from Swift to lead the charge on the chart for double-digit frames.

The Life of a Showgirl Falls from the Top Spot on the Billboard 200

The Life of a Showgirl does not sit at No. 1 on this week’s Billboard 200, Swift swaps spots with Morgan Wallen’s I’m the Problem as she descends to the runner-up slot and he returns to the throne. The CD is nonetheless one of her most successful. Since it opened atop the Billboard 200 back in October, The Life of a Showgirl has racked up a total of an even dozen frames ahead of every other project, ranking as her second-longest-ruling.

Taylor Swift Joins an Elite Group

This latest era manages a very special and very rare career first for the Grammy champion. The Life of a Showgirl and “The Fate of Ophelia” mark the first time in Swift’s nearly two decades as a superstar that one of her albums has spent 10 weeks or more atop the Billboard 200 and the full-length has also seen one of its songs lead the most important songs ranking, the Hot 100, for at least 10 weeks as well. That’s a very specific chart achievement, one that only a handful of artists have accomplished in the past.

Whitney Houston Set the Standard With The Bodyguard

Billboard reports that Swift is now the fifth musical act to see an album lead the Billboard 200 for double-digit weeks with a set that also produces a single that reaches the same milestone on the Hot 100. The first artist to do so was Whitney Houston more than three decades ago. The Bodyguard soundtrack commanded the Billboard 200 for an incredible 20 frames, while “I Will Always Love You,” one of the most successful songs ever, dominated the Hot 100 for 14 weeks between 1992 and 1993.

Santana Followed With Supernatural and Two Smashes

Only a few years later, Santana joined Houston, becoming the second act to check both boxes. His album Supernatural, which spent 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, saw both “Smooth,” with Rob Thomas, and “Maria Maria,” a collaboration with The Product G&B, rack up double-digit stays in first place on the Hot 100. “Smooth” was the bigger of the two, with 12 frames at No. 1, while “Maria Maria” stepped away after 10.

Adele Achieved the Same Feat With 25 and “Hello”

It would be a decade and a half before Adele became the second woman behind Houston, and third artist overall, to join this club. Her album 25 and its lead single, “Hello,” both stopped running the show after an even 10 weeks at No. 1 on their respective charts.

Morgan Wallen Made History With One Thing at a Time

It hasn’t been long since another powerhouse artist made history in this manner, as Morgan Wallen did so only a few years back. The country musician’s album One Thing at a Time topped the Billboard 200 for 19 weeks – one of the most impressive runs in recent history. “Last Night,” Wallen’s most successful song and one of the major singles from One Thing at a Time, stands as one of the longest-running No. 1s in Hot 100 history, with 16 turns at the summit.
