“Marty Supreme” grossed another $5 million at the domestic box office over the weekend, according to early estimates reported by the Hollywood trade publications, pushing Timothée Chalamet’s ping pong drama over the $80 million mark, making it indie distributor A24’s most successful film in North American theaters to date.

Key Facts

“Marty Supreme” grossed an estimated $5.4 million gross over the traditional weekend, overtaking A24’s previous highest grossing movie in total domestic box office sales.

“Marty Supreme” had a reported production budget of $60 million-$70 million, but the film will need to continue attracting audiences to make a profit as theaters typically take about half of ticket sales.

The film is expected to keep generating buzz through awards season, and has already netted a Golden Globe for “Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy” for Chalamet’s performance.

The film is also expected to gross another $1.2 million on Monday over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day federal holiday, for a total of $6.6 million over the long holiday weekend.

“Marty Supreme” opened over the Christmas holiday weekend, initially grossing $27 million over that holiday weekend after weeks of a viral publicity campaign spearheaded by Chalamet.

How Does Marty Supreme Compare To Other A24 Movies?

“Marty Supreme” has now surpassed A24’s previous highest grossing movie, the 2022 Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” which grossed $77 million at domestic theaters and $142.8 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo data. Although the Josh Safdie-directed ping pong drama has surpassed the film at the domestic box office, it’s unclear if it will be as big of a hit internationally. “Marty Supreme” had only grossed $13.9 million at overseas theaters before this weekend.

How Did Other Movies Fare This Weekend?

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” continued to dominate the box office over the weekend, grossing another $13.3 million for its fifth week leading box office sales. The third installment of James Cameron’s “Avatar” series has now grossed over $367 million at domestic theaters. Only one major new release was scheduled for this weekend—“28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” the fourth installment in the zombie horror franchise following last year’s “28 Years Later.” The follow-up underperformed its $20 million-$22 million expectations, as reported by Variety, grossing only about $13 million over the traditional weekend and failing to surpass the still dominant “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” It’s expected to gross about $2 million more over Martin Luther King Jr. Day, for a four-day total of $15 million. Last year’s “28 Years Later,” the first new film in the franchise in about 18 years, opened with $30 million at North American theaters. The third and fourth place slots went to two other holdover hits—Disney’s ”Zootopia 2,” which grossed about $8.7 million, and “The Housemaid,” which continued its theatrical run to gross $8.5 million.

(Photo by Brandon Sloter/Image Of Sport/Getty Images) Getty Images St. Louis Cardinals lifer Adam Wainwright is a pretty easygoing guy, and not unlikely to talk with you about baseball traditions and barbecue, or even share a joke. That personality came out last week during our Zoom call when I mentioned for the first time that I’m a Chicago Cubs fan. He responded to the mention of my fandom, “So far, I don’t think this interview is going very well.” Yet, Wainwright will return to Busch Stadium on September 19 on a more serious note, this time to honor another former Cardinal and friend, the late Darryl Kile. Wainwright will take the mound not as a starting pitcher, but to throw out the game’s ceremonial first pitch. Joining him on the mound will be Kile’s daughter, Sierra, as the two help launch a new program called Playing with Heart. “Darryl’s passing was a reminder that heart disease doesn’t discriminate, even against elite athletes in peak physical shape,” Wainwright said. “This program is about helping people recognize the risks, take action, and hopefully save lives.” Wainwright, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals as a starting pitcher from 2005 to 2023, aims to merge the essence of baseball tradition with a crucial message about heart health. Kile, a beloved pitcher for the Cardinals, tragically passed away in 2002 at the age of 33 as a result of early-onset heart disease. His sudden death shook the baseball world and left a lasting impact on teammates, fans, and especially his family. Now, more than two decades later, Sierra Kile is stepping forward with Wainwright to…
