In a collaboration with HYBE America, Alan Chikin Chow, one of the most-watched YouTube Shorts creators, is bringing his unique, colorful storytelling to Netflix.
Similar to Chow’s popular YouTube anthology series, Alan Universe, the Netflix scripted series will follow a misfit crew of aspiring pop idol rejects enrolled in an arts academy who come together to form a co-ed band.
The emerging artists who will star alongside Chow have not yet been revealed, but will release original music concurrently with the series. The group will not only work together onscreen for the series, but also plans to perform worldwide to become the next pop sensation. Chow and the cast will work closely with HYBE America and Netflix to ensure the music and performances will be as authentic as possible.
“Our groundbreaking project brings together extraordinary creative talent across Netflix and HYBE America to launch a pioneering new franchise for the next generation,” Chow said in a press release. “Together with world-class teams who consistently shape culture on a global scale, our mission is to set a new standard for storytelling: designed to inspire creativity, spark joy, and impart timeless life lessons for audiences worldwide.”
With close to 100 million YouTube subscribers and 1 billion views per month on Chow’s YouTube page, the series will bring his distinctive storytelling, inspired by K-dramas and K-pop, to the forefront on Netflix.
Chow will serve as executive producer alongside James Shin, HYBE America’s President of Film and Television, and Jingu Jang, HYBE America AU President and former Vice President of BIGHIT Music. HYBE America, a subsidiary of HYBE Corp., which represents K-pop’s biggest acts like BTS, ENHYPEN, and LE SSERAFIM, has been leading the charge in entertainment content in film, television, music, technology, brands, and culture.
The new franchise will be a “culture-defining model for how pop groups are created,” Shin says. “With a proven visionary like Alan, who is at the forefront of the creator ecosystem, we’re setting out to produce a groundbreaking series that expands audiences, possibilities, and how fandom is built from day one.”
There is no official title or date set for the series at the moment, but plans to release more information as they head towards production.
