Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) is under fire from his own colleagues after remaining silent on the deadly Border Patrol shooting Saturday in Minnesota, failing to issue any comment as every other Democratic does so — and even as his wife publicly condemns the killing.

“How bad is this? Even our state’s Republican senator has released a statement on Pretti’s killing,” wrote Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) in a social media post on X Sunday night. “Fetterman continues to be an embarrassment to PA.”

Fetterman’s most recent statement on social media was made last week on Thursday where he lamented the loss of a local restaurant – Ruthie’s Diner – which had caught fire. He’s made no mention of the deadly Border Patrol shooting since, as was noted by Boyle — who is speculated to be considering a challenge for Fetterman's seat in 2028.

However, Fetterman’s wife, Gisele Barreto Fetterman, appeared to have gotten ahead of her husband in condemning the killing.

“For more than a decade, I lived undocumented in the US,” Gisele Fetterman, who as a child migrated to the United States from Brazil, wrote in a social media post on X Sunday.

“Every day I carried the same uncertainty and fear lived in my body. What I thought was my private, chronic dread has now become a shared national wound. This now-daily violence is not ‘law and order.’ It is terror inflicted on people who contribute, love, and build their lives here. It’s devastatingly cruel and unAmerican.”

Fetterman has faced scrutiny from Democratic voters over his apparent shift after taking office, from a candidate championing a number of progressive ideals to a senator who has often broken with the party’s left flank.

He voted with Republicans to cave in the government shutdown fight last year, has frequently criticized his own colleagues over their rhetoric on President Donald Trump, and has taken a staunch pro-Israel position that has often clashed with the views of his own constituents.
