WWE Raw Preview: Is AJ Styles Retiring This Weekend?

WWE Raw continues its tremendous build toward what could be AJ Styles’ final match this Saturday at the WWE Royal Rumble. I want to qualify “tremendous build” to mean that WWE has created legitimate doubt as to whom is going to win between Gunther and AJ Styles. This is a rarity in today’s overanalyzed product and patterned booking where “smart” fans are able to easily follow context clues as to who will win or lose. Unfortunately for them, AJ Styles vs. Gunther is the perfect storm of doubt.

Gunter is WWE’s new final boss. He already has a Hall of Fame resume of retiring Hall of Famers including Goldberg and John Cena. Styles has already noted that 2026 will be his final year, but retiring in January feels too soon. Styles’ longtime frienemy Shinsuke Nakamura posted a letter indicating Styles planned on retiring at the Royal Rumble. The post was quickly deleted, but was this because Nakamura didn’t want to spoil Styles’ retirement, or is this an elaborate work to make fans think Styles will indeed retire? What’s important, is nobody will know the answer to this question until the Royal Rumble. As great as the build has been to the AJ Styles vs. Gunther match, a Styles loss would make for a sudden and disappointing retirement tour.

WWE Raw will also feature the return of Bron Breakker after Paul Heyman referenced “The Big Man” in a mystery phone call last week on Raw. Speculation of The Big Man’s identity has ranged from The Rock, to Brock Lesnar to even Vince McMahon. With almost 15,000 fans packed in Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, the reveal could happen as soon as tonight.
