  • Tether launches MiningOS as a free and open-source Bitcoin mining OS
  • MOS supports home to industrial setups with modular architecture
  • It enables peer-to-peer encrypted control without central servers
  • Released under Apache 2.0 license, MOS is hardware-agnostic

Tether has launched an open-source Bitcoin mining operating system called MiningOS (MOS), aiming to simplify and decentralize mining. The platform is designed to support small home setups and large industrial deployments while allowing operators to run and manage hardware locally.

MiningOS Now Available Under Apache 2.0 License

The official announcement was made on February 3, 2026, by Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino through a post on X. MiningOS was introduced a day earlier at the Plan ₿ Forum in San Salvador. It is now publicly available under the Apache 2.0 license, which permits free use, modification, and distribution.

MOS is a modular and scalable system that runs locally, eliminating the need for centralized cloud services. It supports encrypted peer-to-peer communication between devices, offering miners more control over their operations and data.

Built to Support Any Scale of Mining

MiningOS is compatible with a wide range of devices and setups. It is built to handle small-scale mining rigs as well as complex sites with thousands of machines. The platform supports miners, containers, sensors, power meters, weather tools, and multiple mining pools.

According to Ardoino, the software is designed to be deployed across various geographies and infrastructure levels. It integrates hardware and operational data into a single management interface, streamlining performance tracking and energy management.

Each module within the system works independently but is connected through a unified structure. This setup lets operators customize the platform based on their specific operational needs.

Real-Time Monitoring and Customization Tools

The MiningOS dashboard provides real-time information on energy consumption, cooling systems, miner health, and hardware output. It enables miners to make quick adjustments and maintain stable performance without external dependencies.

Tether is also preparing a Mining Software Development Kit (SDK), allowing developers to build new tools and features. The SDK will be shaped with help from the open-source community, encouraging broader ecosystem collaboration.

Unlike proprietary solutions that require recurring fees, MiningOS runs on lightweight devices and is free to operate. This will help level the field for small and mid-size operators who cannot afford enterprise platforms.

Part of Tether’s Bitcoin Infrastructure Strategy

The release of MiningOS aligns with Tether’s expanded focus on Bitcoin infrastructure. Since 2023, the company has increased its investments in mining projects, energy optimization, and decentralization tools.

Although Tether scaled down some mining activities in late 2025 due to energy costs, the company has continued to develop software infrastructure. The launch of MOS is part of that shift toward enabling self-managed, open-source mining solutions.

Tether holds a large Bitcoin reserve as part of its treasury strategy. As of early 2026, the company holds 96,185 BTC, valued at over $8 billion. It ranks among the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin globally.

On its official MOS website, Tether stated: “The mining industry has long been limited by closed systems and proprietary tools. MiningOS changes that, introducing transparency, openness, and collaboration into the core of Bitcoin infrastructure.”
