State-backed QatarEnergy has signed long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) contracts with Japanese and Malaysian companies.

QatarEnergy said in a statement that it would supply Japanese energy company Jera Co up to 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG under a 27-year deal. Deliveries will start in 2028.

The Qatari company also signed a 20-year supply contract with Petronas LNG, a subsidiary of Malaysia’s Petronas, for up to 2 MTPA. This is the first long-term LNG supply agreement between the two companies.

The volumes secured will play a critical role in reinforcing Malaysia’s energy supply security, as well as ensuring stable and reliable LNG availability to meet growing demand, Petronas said in a statement.

No details were given on when deliveries will start.

Last month, QatarEnergy signed a memorandum of understanding with Egypt’s petroleum ministry to supply LNG during the summer to meet domestic demand.

QatarEnergy, one of the biggest LNG producers globally, is expanding the North Field, the world’s largest natural gas reservoir. At full production, the project is expected to produce 126 million tonnes of LNG per annum by 2027, boosting its output by 85 percent from the current 77 MTPA.
