Telecoms company T2mobile, formerly 9mobile, has lost about 30,000 subscribers to mobile number portability in 2025. This is according to an analysis by Technext from the latest industry data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Porting is when subscribers transfer an existing phone number from one service provider to a new provider. People use it to find better or cheaper services or cheaper plans without the inconvenience of changing their contact number.

The telco saw a total of 29,974 subscribers leave its network. Out of the 41,245 subscribers that switched to other service providers in 2025, it recorded the highest with 72.7%.

Porting: How T2mobile lost in 2025

In more detail, T2mobile recorded the highest in January (6,716), followed by April (5,042) and May (3,863). In fact, the telco witnessed the largest exodus in the first six months of the year: 24,802 subscribers, representing 82.7% of the entire porting activity in 2025.

In the second half of the year, it experienced a slowdown in porting out activities: August (1,111), December (945) and October (890) recorded the highest port out of subscribers to other service providers.

Conversely, the telco only gained 107 subscribers during the same period. This means that only 0.26% of the 41,245 Nigerian telecoms subscribers who switched service providers in 2025 switched to it.

The data gives a summary of T2mobile’s operation, rebranding and partnership in 2025.

Recall that the company rebranded from 9mobile to T2mobile, joining a long trend of rebuilding that started with Etisalat. The rebranding was a deliberate effort to regain market share and attract subscribers through service quality.

After that, T2mobile signed a multi-million dollar deal with Huawei to upgrade its network infrastructure. Subsequently, it entered a strategic spectrum lease agreement with MTN Nigeria, which allows its subscribers to use MTN’s infrastructure where coverage is weaker.

The reduction in the volume of porting subscribers during the second half of 2025 is a direct result of these.

At the positive end, MTN recorded the highest gains with 24,550 (59.5%) port-in subscribers, and Airtel distantly followed with 11,065 (26.8%). Globacom received 5,542 (13.44%), while T2mobile is at the far end with 107 (0.26%) outgoing subscribers in 2025.

In terms of subscriber base, T2mobile now holds 1.8% market share at 3.2 million subscribers. While this still places the operator behind MTN, GLO and Airtel, it has recorded an increase in subscribers, gaining 500,619 subscribers between August and December 2025.
