Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has donated to Shielded Labs again. The funds will support Crosslink, a major consensus upgrade for Zcash.
Crosslink adds a finality layer to Zcash’s existing proof-of-work system. The upgrade aims to make transactions more secure and settlements faster.
Crosslink works alongside Zcash’s current proof-of-work consensus. It doesn’t replace the existing system. Instead, it adds a parallel finality layer that prevents chain reorganizations.
This protects against rollback attacks while maintaining all block production on the PoW chain.
The finality gadget anchors blocks and provides stronger settlement guarantees. Confirmed transactions become irreversible. This reduces double-spend risk significantly. Exchanges can require fewer confirmations. Cross-chain integrations become more reliable.
Shielded Labs stated that Crosslink makes Zcash easier to integrate into the broader crypto ecosystem. The upgrade maintains existing security properties while adding new protections.
Buterin’s donation will fund the transition from prototype to production-ready system. Shielded Labs plans to launch a persistent, incentivized testnet where participants earn ZEC. The team will then move into productionization.
This phase includes design specifications and extensive security analysis.
Audits will verify the system’s integrity. Shielded Labs will coordinate with wallet providers and infrastructure teams. Community engagement remains a priority throughout development.
The organization emphasized that mainnet activation depends on several factors. Technical readiness must be confirmed. Security reviews must pass. Broad community support is essential before any deployment.
Buterin explained his support in a statement. He called Zcash one of the most honorable crypto projects. The project’s steadfast focus on privacy impressed him. Crosslink will make Zcash more secure on a lower security budget, he noted.
This sustainability aspect matters for Zcash’s long-term future. The upgrade could reduce operational costs while improving security. Buterin sees this as supporting the network’s resilience.
This marks his second donation to Shielded Labs. His first contribution came in 2023. That initial funding helped form a dedicated Crosslink development team.
Shielded Labs operates as a Swiss-based Zcash support organization. The group focuses on building unstoppable private money. Protocol development projects that strengthen network security are its main priority.
The organization runs on donations from Zcash holders and supporters. It operates independently of the Dev Fund and block rewards. This independence allows focused work on long-term sustainability projects.
Shielded Labs thanked Buterin for his continued support.
The organization noted his long-time involvement with Zcash. He has contributed to protocol design and security discussions for years. His engagement helps advance work that strengthens the entire ecosystem.
The Crosslink upgrade represents a significant technical evolution for Zcash. It addresses key pain points without abandoning the network’s proven foundation.
