TLDR

  • Elon Musk announced SpaceX is prioritizing a Moon city over Mars, with completion possible in under 10 years
  • SpaceX targets March 2027 for an uncrewed Moon landing while pushing Mars missions back five to seven years
  • Moon missions offer faster launch schedules compared to Mars’ 26-month launch windows, making lunar development quicker
  • The company holds a $4 billion Artemis program contract but expects NASA revenue to drop below 5% this year
  • U.S. and China are racing to return astronauts to the Moon for the first time since 1972

Elon Musk revealed Sunday that SpaceX has changed its space exploration strategy to prioritize building a Moon city. The company is delaying its Mars ambitions to focus on lunar development first.

Musk posted on X that SpaceX can build a “self-growing city” on the Moon in less than 10 years. Mars colonization remains part of the plan but won’t start for five to seven years.

Moon missions have shorter travel times and more frequent launch opportunities. Mars only offers launch windows approximately once every 26 months due to planetary alignment.

New Timeline and Mission Plans

SpaceX told investors it plans an uncrewed lunar landing by March 2027. The Wall Street Journal first reported the strategy change Friday.

This marks a shift from Musk’s previous statements. He said last year that SpaceX would send an uncrewed Mars mission by late 2026.

The company plays a central role in NASA’s Artemis program. SpaceX secured a $4 billion contract to land astronauts on the Moon using its Starship spacecraft.

Despite the NASA partnership, Musk said Monday that NASA will account for under 5% of SpaceX revenue this year. The Starlink satellite internet system generates the majority of company income.

Global Moon Race Intensifies

The United States and China are competing to land astronauts on the Moon this decade. Humans last walked on the lunar surface during Apollo 17 in 1972.

President Trump signed an executive order accelerating NASA’s Artemis timeline. The directive aims to put astronauts on the Moon by 2028.

SpaceX’s lunar mission could launch as early as 2027. The program has experienced several schedule delays.

China has advanced its own crewed lunar program. The competition has intensified U.S. efforts to return to the Moon quickly.

Business Expansion and Future Plans

SpaceX recently acquired xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence company, in a $1 trillion valuation deal. The acquisition supports development of space-based data centers.

Musk believes orbital data centers are more energy efficient than ground facilities. This becomes increasingly important as AI computing demands grow.

The company plans a public offering this year that could raise $50 billion. If successful, it would become the largest IPO in history.

SpaceX aired its first Super Bowl commercial Sunday promoting Starlink Wi-Fi services. The advertisement reflects growing focus on commercial revenue streams.

The Starship spacecraft completed its 10th test flight in August 2025 from Starbase, Texas. Starship is essential for both lunar and future Mars missions.

SpaceX continues developing the technology needed for deep space missions. The Moon city project will serve as a testing ground for technologies needed for eventual Mars colonization.
