SoftBank misses profit estimates but boosts profit, doubles investment gains and leans harder into OpenAI and AI assets after major T-Mobile and Nvidia exits.

Summary
  • SoftBank reported ¥248.6B quarterly profit vs ¥336.7B expected, with 7.9% YoY net sales growth and a near 400% surge in net income over nine months.
  • Vision Funds swung to a gain and now hold most of SoftBank’s ~11% OpenAI stake, as the group exits T-Mobile and Nvidia while levering Arm and other assets.
  • CFO Yoshimitsu Goto says ~60% of assets are now AI/ASI-related and backs OpenAI’s long-term monetization via enterprise deals, hardware and advertising.

SoftBank Group Corp. reported a quarterly profit of ¥248.6 billion, falling short of analyst estimates of ¥336.7 billion, according to company financial results released this week.

For the nine-month period from April to December, net sales increased 7.9% year-over-year, according to the company’s earnings statement. Income before tax rose 228%, while net income climbed nearly 400% compared to the same period the previous year. Investment gains doubled during the period, though the group’s investment business outside of Vision Funds declined 91.9%.

The SoftBank Vision Funds unit reported a substantial gain, reversing a loss recorded in the prior year period. The Vision Funds hold the majority of the company’s OpenAI exposure, according to company disclosures.

SoftBank committed capital to OpenAI in March 2025, with funds directed through SVF2, the company’s second Vision Fund, according to regulatory filings. The first funding round closed in April 2025 with participation from SVF2, followed by a second round in December. SoftBank’s total ownership stake in OpenAI reached approximately 11%, with the first investment in OpenAI Global LLC and the second in OpenAI Group PBC following a recapitalization completed in October. The company holds its OpenAI shares directly through SVF2.

Between June and December, SoftBank sold a significant stake in T-Mobile US Inc., according to securities filings. The company also divested its entire Nvidia Corp. stake in October. SoftBank has borrowed against its holdings in Arm Holdings and other assets to maintain liquidity, according to financial disclosures.

In December 2025, SoftBank announced plans to acquire DigitalBridge Group Inc., a Florida-based data center investment firm, including debt. In October, the company agreed to acquire ABB Ltd.’s robotics division.

Chief Financial Officer Yoshimitsu Goto stated during the earnings call that 60% of the company’s assets are now AI- or ASI-related, referring to artificial superintelligence. When questioned about the company’s continued investment in OpenAI, Goto said the company assumes OpenAI will lead the industry and is convinced of its potential, which drives the investment strategy. Goto indicated the company believes OpenAI is in early stages of monetizing its technology, with potential future revenue streams from enterprise deals, hardware, and advertising, though OpenAI has not yet achieved profitability.

SoftBank shares have risen in 2026 following gains in 2025. The stock received additional support this week after Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae’s electoral victory over the weekend. Takaichi has advocated for increased government spending in AI and semiconductor sectors, according to campaign statements.

Shiba Inu Leader Breaks Silence on $2.4M Shibarium Exploit, Confirms Active Recovery

Shiba Inu Leader Breaks Silence on $2.4M Shibarium Exploit, Confirms Active Recovery

The lead developer of Shiba Inu, Shytoshi Kusama, has publicly addressed the Shibarium bridge exploit that occurred recently, draining $2.4 million from the network. After days of speculation about his involvement in managing the crisis, the project leader broke his silence.Kusama emphasized that a special ”war room” has been set up to restore stolen finances and enhance network security. The statement is his first official words since the bridge compromise occurred.”Although I am focusing on AI initiatives to benefit all our tokens, I remain with the developers and leadership in the war room,” Kusama posted on social media platform X. He dismissed claims that he had distanced himself from the project as ”utterly preposterous.”The developer said that the reason behind his silence at first was strategic. Before he could make any statements publicly, he must have taken time to evaluate what he termed a complex and deep situation properly. Kusama also vowed to provide further updates in the official Shiba Inu channels as the team comes up with long-term solutions.Attack Details and Immediate ResponseAs highlighted in our previous article, targeted Shibarium's bridge infrastructure through a sophisticated attack vector. Hackers gained unauthorized access to validator signing keys, compromising the network's security framework. The hackers executed a flash loan to acquire 4.6 million BONE ShibaSwap tokens. The validator power on the network was majority held by them after this purchase. They were able to transfer assets out of Shibarium with this control. The response of Shibarium developers was timely to limit the breach. They instantly halted all validator functions in order to avoid additional exploitation. The team proceeded to deposit the assets under staking in a multisig hardware wallet that is secure.External security companies were involved in the investigation effort. Hexens, Seal 911, and PeckShield are collaborating with internal developers to examine the attack and discover vulnerabilities. The project's key concerns are network stability and the protection of user funds, as underlined by the lead developer, Dhairya. The team is working around the clock to restore normal operations. In an effort to recover the funds, Shiba Inu has offered a bounty worth 5 Ether ($23,000) to the hackers. The bounty offer includes a 30-day deadline with decreasing rewards after seven days.Market Impact and Recovery IncentivesThe exploit caused serious volatility in the marketplace of Shiba Inu ecosystem tokens. SHIB dropped about 6% after the news of the attack. However, The token has bounced back and is currently trading at around $0.00001298 at the time of writing.SHIB Price Source CoinMarketCap
