Fluent’s Revolutionary Approach: How Combining Different VMs Creates Practical Blockchain Interoperability

In a significant development for blockchain technology, the zero-knowledge rollup project Fluent is pioneering a novel approach to interoperability by enabling multiple virtual machines to operate on a single chain, according to a comprehensive report from Tiger Research published in March 2025. This breakthrough addresses one of the most persistent challenges in the blockchain ecosystem: the inability of different virtual machines to communicate and execute transactions compatibly. Consequently, Fluent’s solution could fundamentally reshape how blockchain networks interact, potentially accelerating mainstream adoption of decentralized technologies.

Fluent’s Innovative Approach to Virtual Machine Integration

Tiger Research’s report, titled ‘Fluent: All VMs as a Single Lego Block,’ presents a compelling argument that the blockchain industry has reached a critical juncture. Specifically, the performance competition among individual chains has largely concluded, with most contemporary networks demonstrating sufficient throughput and scalability. However, the next frontier of competition centers on interoperability between different virtual machine architectures. For instance, ecosystems like Ethereum and Solana utilize fundamentally different VMs—the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and Solana Virtual Machine (SVM), respectively—which prevents them from executing the same transactions natively.

Fluent addresses this challenge through its innovative “Blended Execution” feature, which enables the integration of multiple virtual machines within a single Layer 2 chain. This approach effectively breaks down technical barriers between different blockchain environments. Moreover, by supporting various VMs simultaneously, Fluent maximizes composability—a crucial factor for developers seeking to build applications that can interact seamlessly across different blockchain ecosystems. The report emphasizes that this technical advancement represents more than just incremental improvement; rather, it constitutes a paradigm shift in how blockchain networks can be designed and utilized.

The Evolution of Blockchain Interoperability Solutions

Blockchain interoperability has evolved significantly since the early days of cryptocurrency. Initially, most blockchain networks operated as isolated silos with limited communication capabilities. Subsequently, developers created various bridging solutions to facilitate asset transfers between chains. However, these bridges often introduced security vulnerabilities and complexity for users. According to blockchain architecture experts, true interoperability requires more than just asset transfers; it necessitates the ability for smart contracts and decentralized applications to interact seamlessly across different virtual machine environments.

The following table illustrates the progression of interoperability solutions:

Generation Approach Limitations
First Generation Centralized Bridges Security risks, single points of failure
Second Generation Cross-Chain Messaging Protocols Complex implementation, limited functionality
Third Generation VM-Native Interoperability (Fluent’s approach) Technical complexity, but enables full composability

Fluent’s solution represents this third generation of interoperability technology. By enabling different virtual machines to operate within a unified environment, the platform allows developers to:

  • Build applications that leverage the unique strengths of multiple blockchain ecosystems
  • Reduce fragmentation in the developer community
  • Create more sophisticated financial products and services
  • Improve user experience through seamless cross-chain interactions

Tiger Research’s Analysis of the Competitive Landscape

Tiger Research, an established Asian Web3 research and consulting firm with expertise in blockchain architecture, provides valuable context for understanding Fluent’s position in the market. Their analysis suggests that while numerous projects have attempted to solve interoperability challenges, most have focused on creating universal standards or translation layers. In contrast, Fluent’s approach maintains the native execution environments of different virtual machines while enabling them to operate within a shared Layer 2 framework. This preserves the unique characteristics and optimizations of each VM while facilitating communication between them.

The research firm further notes that Fluent distinguishes itself through its focus on building an on-chain environment with real users rather than prioritizing vanity metrics. This user-centric approach manifests through several key initiatives:

  • Prints: An on-chain reputation aggregator that creates verifiable user profiles based on historical blockchain activity
  • Blended Builders Club (BBC): An ecosystem accelerator program designed to support developers building cross-VM applications
  • Community governance mechanisms that prioritize practical utility over theoretical maximums

These initiatives reflect a broader trend in the blockchain industry toward sustainable growth models that prioritize actual usage over speculative metrics. Industry analysts observe that projects focusing on real-world utility tend to demonstrate greater resilience during market fluctuations and maintain more engaged communities over the long term.

Technical Implementation and Practical Applications

Fluent’s technical architecture represents a sophisticated implementation of zero-knowledge proof technology combined with innovative virtual machine integration. The platform operates as a zk-rollup Layer 2 solution, which means it processes transactions off-chain before submitting cryptographic proofs to a base layer (typically Ethereum). This approach provides several advantages:

  • Significantly reduced transaction costs compared to executing directly on Layer 1
  • Enhanced privacy through zero-knowledge cryptography
  • Maintained security guarantees through cryptographic verification
  • Improved scalability without compromising decentralization

The “Blended Execution” feature represents the core innovation that enables different virtual machines to operate within Fluent’s environment. Technically, this involves creating a unified execution layer that can interpret and process instructions from multiple VM architectures. When a transaction requires interaction between different VMs, Fluent’s system translates and coordinates the execution across the appropriate environments. This technical capability has profound implications for developers and users alike.

From a practical perspective, Fluent’s approach enables several compelling use cases:

  • Cross-ECosystem DeFi Applications: Financial products that leverage liquidity and functionality from both Ethereum and Solana ecosystems simultaneously
  • Multi-Chain Gaming Experiences: Games that utilize assets and logic from different blockchain environments within a unified experience
  • Enterprise Blockchain Solutions: Business applications that can interact with multiple blockchain networks without requiring separate implementations
  • Developer Tooling: Frameworks that allow developers to write once and deploy across multiple blockchain environments

The Broader Impact on Blockchain Adoption

The implications of Fluent’s technology extend beyond technical innovation to potentially accelerate mainstream blockchain adoption. Historically, blockchain fragmentation has presented a significant barrier to entry for both developers and users. Developers faced difficult choices about which ecosystem to build on, often locking themselves into a single technical stack. Users encountered complex processes for moving assets between chains and limitations in the functionality available on any single network.

By enabling seamless interoperability between different virtual machines, Fluent reduces these barriers significantly. Developers can now create applications that leverage the unique strengths of multiple blockchain ecosystems without requiring users to navigate complex bridging processes. This improved user experience could make blockchain technology more accessible to mainstream audiences who may not possess technical expertise. Furthermore, the ability to combine different virtual machine environments creates opportunities for more sophisticated applications that were previously impractical or impossible to build.

Industry observers note that successful implementation of Fluent’s approach could influence the broader direction of blockchain development. Other projects may adopt similar strategies for virtual machine integration, potentially leading to greater standardization and compatibility across the industry. This convergence could reduce duplication of effort and accelerate innovation as developers spend less time solving interoperability challenges and more time building novel applications.

Conclusion

Fluent’s innovative approach to combining different virtual machines represents a significant advancement in blockchain interoperability technology. As detailed in Tiger Research’s comprehensive analysis, the platform’s “Blended Execution” feature enables multiple virtual machines to operate within a single Layer 2 environment, breaking down barriers between different blockchain ecosystems. This technical breakthrough addresses one of the most persistent challenges in the blockchain industry while creating new opportunities for developers and users alike. Consequently, Fluent’s solution could accelerate the transition toward a more interconnected and functional blockchain ecosystem, potentially driving broader adoption of decentralized technologies. The project’s focus on building practical utility through initiatives like Prints and the Blended Builders Club further distinguishes it in a competitive landscape increasingly focused on real-world impact rather than theoretical potential.

Fintech Is Leveling the Playing Field in Trading, Says Zak Westphal

The post Fintech Is Leveling the Playing Field in Trading, Says Zak Westphal appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. The trading world was once divided into two groups: those with access to high-powered data and those without.  As you might have guessed, it was the major institutions (like Wall Street) that had a monopoly on the tools, data access, and speed. This left retail traders fighting to keep up. This gap is closing rapidly, and the main reason is the introduction of new technology and platforms entering the fold. Zak Westphal has been at the forefront of this transformation. While Co-Founding StocksToTrade, he has been a big part of empowering everyday traders to gain access to the real-time information and algorithmic systems that have long provided Wall Street with its edge. We spoke with him about how fintech is reshaping the landscape and what it really means for retail traders today. Fintech has changed everything from banking to payments. In your opinion, what has been its greatest impact on the world of trading? For me, it’s all about access. When I began my trading career, institutions had a significant advantage, even more pronounced than it is now. They had direct feeds of data, algorithmic systems, and research teams monitoring information right around the clock. Retail traders, on the other hand, had slower information and pretty basic tools in comparison.  Fintech has substantially changed the game. Today, a retail trader from home can access real-time market data, scan thousands of stocks in mere seconds, and utilize algorithmic tools that were once only available to hedge funds. I can’t think of a time when the access for everyday traders has been as accessible as it is today. That doesn’t mean the advantages are gone, because Wall Street still has resources that individuals simply can’t have. However, there is now an opportunity for everyday traders actually to compete. And that is a…
