Here’s something that doesn’t get discussed enough in boardrooms: your employees spend more than half a workday every week cleaning up after AI. Not building with it. Not innovating with it. Fixing it.

A recent Zapier survey of 1,100 U.S. enterprise AI users puts a number on what many of us have been feeling: the average worker spends 4.5 hours per week revising, correcting, and sometimes completely redoing AI-generated output. 58% spend three or more hours per week on this. And yet, 92% still say AI makes them more productive. That tension tells you a lot about where we actually are with AI adoption.

The productivity paradox is real

I’ll admit, seeing those two numbers side by side initially made me believe they were mutually exclusive. However, the numbers work out in the end. AI saves time by eliminating hours of wasted effort (despite the cleanup), and the overall net savings are real.

But organizations often don’t measure or track the hours their teams spend cleaning up their AI outputs. They have been focusing on metrics, such as adoption rates and licensing metrics, and no one is asking, “How many hours of your team’s time were spent this week making AI output something you could use?”

That blind spot can cost an organization.

Where AI falls apart (it’s not where you think)

You’d expect writing to be the biggest problem, but it’s not. 55% of respondents said the rework required for data analysis and visualization was actually the largest; research and fact-finding accounted for 52%. Writing emails and customer communications? Just 46%.

While much of the public discussion about AI quality has centered on tone and voice, the real issue lies in areas where accuracy is the key factor. With AI producing professionally looking charts, summaries, and analyses with confidence, however, when those analyses are scrutinized, they collapse. For financial and accounting departments, the problems with AI-generated content can be costly. 85% reported at least one negative outcome from using AI-generated content, and they spend an average of 4.6 hours per week cleaning up such content.

The training gap nobody can afford to ignore

One of the more striking data points: workers without AI training are six times more likely to say AI makes them less productive. Only 69% of untrained workers report productivity gains, compared to 94% of those who received employer-provided training.

Here’s the interesting wrinkle, though: trained employees actually spend more time fixing AI output (five hours a week versus two). They also report more negative consequences. That sounds bad until you realize what it means: trained workers use AI more aggressively, in higher-stakes work, where the payoff is bigger and so is the cleanup. They’re getting real value from it because they understand both the tool and its limits.

Untrained workers aren’t having fewer problems because they’re better at AI, they’re having fewer problems because they don’t see as many opportunities to apply it so they’re using it more sparingly.

What actually works: infrastructure over enthusiasm

The survey points to a relatively consistent picture. When organizations provide the right framework, AI performs better.

Employees who have access to an orchestration tool for use with AI report that they are able to increase their productivity by 97% compared to those without an orchestration tool (77%). Those with access to internal documentation, brand guides, templates, or style guides report a 96% increase in productivity when using AI. Workers with prompt libraries and ongoing training reported a 95% increase in productivity. Remove all of those, and reported productivity was 77%, a 20-point difference from the other three groups.

For Senior IT Leaders and CIOs, there are several practical takeaways to work on now.  First, make AI training mandatory. Treat it like any other critical rollout. Second, create company context within your AI workflows to reduce the need for AI to make assumptions about approved terminology, compliance boundaries, and customer commitments. Third, establishing formal review processes, especially in finance, engineering, and data teams, where errors carry the steepest costs. And finally, start measuring cleanup time as an operational metric. You can’t improve what you aren’t tracking.

What’s Next

The organizations that will get the most from AI in 2026 won’t be the ones with the most tools or the highest adoption numbers. They’ll be the ones who treated AI output quality as an operational challenge, built boring repeatable systems around it, and measured whether those systems actually worked.

AI is generating real value for the vast majority of workers. But it’s also generating significant rework that’s invisible to leadership. Closing that gap is the next chapter of AI maturity, and it starts with being honest about the 4.5 hours no one has been talking about.
