Bhutan launches Solana-backed digital nomad visa, expands crypto tourism payments, and integrates TER tokenized gold, highlighting a national blockchain adoption strategy shift.

Bhutan has introduced a blockchain-powered visa targeting global digital nomads worldwide. The system involves the use of modern crypto infrastructure that facilitates applications in a secure manner. For this reason, officials are trying to attract remote workers who are looking for places to settle long-term.

The government verified that the visa operates on the Solana blockchain network. Furthermore, applicants must buy 10,000 dollars worth of TER tokenized gold. In addition, the program also requires a separate application fee payment of 2,800 dollars.

Officials said the participants can legally stay in Bhutan for a maximum of 36 months. However, authorities stated that the deposit is still fully refundable upon completion of the program. Therefore, the structure is like the secured residency-linked financial guarantee mechanism model.

In May 2025, Bhutan introduced the country’s first nationwide cryptocurrency-enabled tourism payment platform. Moreover, visitors could pay in visa fees with more than 100 cryptocurrencies worldwide. As a result, the system was more convenient for travelers who did not have access to local currency.

The infrastructure is based on Binance Pay via Bhutan’s DK Bank. Furthermore, payments are instantly and securely converted to a merchant settlement in Bhutanese Ngultrum. Therefore, crypto volatility risks are minimal for domestic service providers.

TER Token Launch Deepens Bhutan’s Blockchain Strategy

Bhutan fostered the relationship with Solana with the launch of the TER gold-backed digital token. Moreover, the token has been officially introduced on December 17, 2025 celebration. As a result, it is possible for digital access of sovereign physical gold reserves worldwide with the help of TER.

On top of this, Bhutan has also anchored its National Digital Identity system on Ethereum in October 2025. Furthermore, the adoption of blockchain was characterized by officials as being in line with the goals of governance modernization. Therefore, there are multiple networks that support the growing digital infrastructure ecosystem framework in Bhutan.

Bhutan also amassed close to 13,011 Bitcoin valued at near 1 billion dollars. Also, hydropower is used by mining operations to facilitate sustainable digital asset production. As a result, the policy makers associate the crypto strategy as environmental and happiness as national priorities.

However, officials said digital systems must have resilient connectivity and cybersecurity protections. Furthermore, disruptions like Gaza also raise risks of infrastructure damage for digital payments. Therefore, Bhutan continues to invest in redundancy and secure national technology frameworks.

Meanwhile, regional governments keep a close eye on Bhutan’s blockchain-based administrative innovations these days. Moreover, digital nomad policies compete with each other around the world to attract mobile technology professionals. Consequently, Bhutan positions itself in the context of emerging crypto-enabled mobility strategies in the world on an active basis.

Financial incentives incorporated in the visa structure make Bhutan unique from competitors. Furthermore, refundable deposits may lessen perceived migration and compliance risks considerably. Therefore, policymakers expect greater involvement from remote workers and entrepreneurs all over the world.

However, regulatory clarity and international cooperation are key to long-term success. Moreover, recognition of crypto payments across borders is still evolving unevenly worldwide at the moment. Consequently, Bhutan’s experiment might have ramifications for the broader debates on digital governance adoption at the international level.
