MetaMask and Mastercard have launched a crypto debit card in the United States for direct wallet spending. The card allows users to pay with digital assets wherever Mastercard operates. The companies confirmed nationwide availability after completing a limited European pilot in 2024.
MetaMask partnered with Mastercard to connect self-custodied wallets to the global payments network. As a result, users can spend crypto directly without pre-converting assets. The card processes transactions instantly at the point of sale.
Consensys collaborated with Mastercard to develop and issue the product. The firms previously launched a pilot across the United Kingdom and the European Union in 2024. Now, U.S. users can access the same functionality nationwide.
MetaMask Staff Product Manager Ale Machado described the wallet control model. He said, “With MetaMask Card, your assets stay in your wallet under your control until the exact moment you make a purchase.” He added that users do not transfer funds to third parties before spending.
The company requires users to complete identity verification and compliance checks before activation. However, once approved, users can add the card to supported digital wallets. They can then tap or pay online wherever Mastercard is accepted.
MetaMask introduced a Metal Card tier for higher-volume users and frequent travelers. The premium tier costs $199 per year and offers enhanced benefits. Cardholders can receive up to 3% cashback on the first $10,000 spent annually.
Standard cardholders can receive up to 1% cashback on purchases. Machado said, “The Metal Card is for users who want to go further.” He also confirmed zero foreign transaction fees and higher spending limits for premium members.
Premium users also gain access to travel discounts through Entravel. The company confirmed deeper travel perks and exclusive event access. Meanwhile, the Virtual card option offers a fully digital alternative without a physical card.
MetaMask recently launched mUSD, an Ethereum-based stablecoin and cashback reward token issued by Stripe. The wallet provider also confirmed plans for a native token. It unveiled a $30 million rewards program ahead of the planned token distribution.
Machado said the European pilot showed regular daily usage patterns. He stated that users treated the card like any other payment card. The company now expects similar behavior from U.S. customers following the national rollout.
