Firestorm as Trump's wild 'crashout' reveals Pentagon's 'mass surveillance' plot

President Donald Trump lashed out at the artificial intelligence company Anthropic on Friday, slamming them for refusing to change their safeguard rules against automated use of weapons for the Defense Department, claiming they want to force generals to "obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution," and ordering the government to phase out any contracts they have to use the company's "Leftwing nut job" Claude AI model.

The outburst triggered an immediate reaction from elected officials and analysts on social media.

"Anthropic objected in part to the Department of Defense using its AI technology to engage in domestic mass surveillance," wrote Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA). "Do you agree that’s a radical left, woke position? That’s actually the Constitutional position, one that should be embraced by Americans regardless of party."

"This is because the Pentagon and Trump don’t like Anthropic’s language preventing their tech from being used to surveil Americans or for autonomous weapons," wrote Allison Gill of "Mueller, She Wrote." "Which means the Pentagon wants to use their tech to surveil Americans and build autonomous weapons."

"This afternoon's crashout brought to you by a bunch of nerds with very weird ideas about whether code is something you should be nice to," wrote financial expert George Pearkes.

"If I ever get in trouble with the mods at Bluesky, I'm going to shout at them for 'forcing me to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution,'" wrote Institute for Humane Studies Senior Director of Liberal Projects Aaron Ross Powell.

Some other commenters, though, noted that for all Trump's bluster, he is effectively giving up, since he had previously been considering much more drastic measures, like ordering Anthropic to change its policies under the Defense Production Act, or declaring the company a supply chain threat.

"If you liked the movie War Games, you’re going to love this administration’s plan," wrote former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance. "Thank you for drawing a line Anthropic. Please stick to it."

"I dunno what happens next but... this kinda seems like the Trump administration is just folding on Anthropic?" wrote Matt Gertz of Media Matters for America."

"Closest you're gonna get to Trump publicly backing down is him just cancelling Anthropic's contracts instead of designating them a supply chain risk as was threatened," wrote economics analyst Joey Politano. "Real kudos to Anthropic for standing up, real dumb moves by the WH to start this episode."

Ethereum unveils roadmap focusing on scaling, interoperability, and security at Japan Dev Conference

The post Ethereum unveils roadmap focusing on scaling, interoperability, and security at Japan Dev Conference appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Key Takeaways Ethereum’s new roadmap was presented by Vitalik Buterin at the Japan Dev Conference. Short-term priorities include Layer 1 scaling and raising gas limits to enhance transaction throughput. Vitalik Buterin presented Ethereum’s development roadmap at the Japan Dev Conference today, outlining the blockchain platform’s priorities across multiple timeframes. The short-term goals focus on scaling solutions and increasing Layer 1 gas limits to improve transaction capacity. Mid-term objectives target enhanced cross-Layer 2 interoperability and faster network responsiveness to create a more seamless user experience across different scaling solutions. The long-term vision emphasizes building a secure, simple, quantum-resistant, and formally verified minimalist Ethereum network. This approach aims to future-proof the platform against emerging technological threats while maintaining its core functionality. The roadmap presentation comes as Ethereum continues to compete with other blockchain platforms for market share in the smart contract and decentralized application space. Quantexa Launches Platform to Reduce Stablecoin Strain on Small Banks

The post Quantexa Launches Platform to Reduce Stablecoin Strain on Small Banks appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. In brief Quantexa designed an AML solution for mid-size and community banks. It can help them identify crypto-powered crime, according to Quantexa’s Christopher Bagnall. Stablecoin legislation is expected to unlock new competitors. Quantexa, a data and analytics software firm, introduced a product on Wednesday that’s intended to help smaller financial institutions fight crypto-powered crime in the U.S. The London-based company is now offering a cloud-based, anti-money laundering (AML) solution through Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, which is “designed specifically for U.S. mid-size and community banks,” according to a press release. Quantexa said the pre-packaged product allows teams investigating financial crimes to make faster decisions with less overhead while maintaining accuracy, noting that banks are held to the same compliance standards across the U.S., despite what resources they may have. The product, dubbed Cloud AML, is also meant to reduce “false positives.” A company survey published earlier this month found that 36% of AML professionals think digital assets will have the biggest impact on the AML industry within the next five years. The product’s debut follows the passage of stablecoin legislation in the U.S. this summer that’s expected to unlock competition from the likes of Bank of Ameerica and Citigroup. With federal rules in place, stablecoins are expected to become more mainstream. Some banks are taking a forward-looking approach toward their products, but most are more concerned about the ability to monitor inflows and outflows within the context of financial crime, Chris Bagnall, Quantexa’s head of financial crimes solutions for North America, told Decrypt. “They’re just trying to find a way to monitor it, and that’s pretty much it,” he said. “Only the most innovative banks, which is a small handful in this space, are focused on making it a business.” Banks may be able to see that a customer received or…
