Telegram Adds Member Tags and Privacy Controls in March 2026 Update

Telegram's March 2026 update introduces member tags for group chats, disable sharing for private messages, GIF editing tools, and streamlined login authentication.

Telegram Adds Member Tags and Privacy Controls in March 2026 Update

Telegram rolled out a substantial feature update on March 1, 2026, adding member identification tags, enhanced privacy controls for private chats, and expanded media editing capabilities across its platform.

The headline feature lets group chat members display customizable tags next to their names—useful for showing job roles, academic focus, or community interests. Admins can control whether members set their own tags or restrict that ability to moderators only. Admin tags display in a distinct color to maintain hierarchy visibility.

Privacy Gets Granular

Perhaps more significant for privacy-conscious users: Telegram now allows disabling message sharing in one-on-one conversations. The feature blocks forwarding, prevents screenshots, and stops media downloads from protected chats. It builds on content protection tools Telegram first introduced for groups and channels back in 2021.

There's a catch—this particular feature requires a Telegram Premium subscription.

Media Editing Expansion

The update brings several quality-of-life improvements for content creators. GIFs from the built-in panel can now carry captions positioned above or below the animation. Users can also convert any photo to a sticker with a single tap, then edit it to cut out objects or add text before sending.

Both GIFs and stickers now open in Telegram's media editor for trimming, drawing, and emoji overlays—tools that previously required third-party apps.

Authentication and Developer Tools

Telegram expanded its authentication capabilities with a streamlined "Log In With Telegram" option for third-party apps and websites. Users can optionally share their phone number and enable direct Telegram notifications from services—reducing friction for both sign-ups and ongoing engagement.

For developers, all bots can now enable streaming text responses, a feature previously limited to AI bots since their 2024 introduction. The update also adds dynamic time formatting that automatically adjusts to each recipient's timezone.

These additions continue Telegram's aggressive feature expansion. The platform has consistently released monthly updates since late 2023, when it introduced channel recommendations, story reposting, and enhanced Premium customization options. That push coincided with WhatsApp's broadcast channels hitting 500 million monthly users—suggesting Telegram remains focused on differentiation through power-user features rather than competing on raw user counts.

The full update is available now across all Telegram clients.
