Claude Introduces Memory Expansion and History Migration as Registration Numbers Explode Following Government Fallout
In response to an overwhelming wave of new registrations stemming from its recent standoff with federal authorities, Anthropic has made its memory functionality accessible to all Claude users.
Previously restricted to premium subscribers, this memory capability enables Claude to retain information from earlier interactions. ChatGPT had already made this functionality available without charge.
Anthropolis simultaneously introduced a migration utility that enables incoming users to transfer their conversation archives from competing AI assistants including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot through a straightforward copy-paste mechanism.
The transfer process requires users to request their current AI platform to generate their data as a code block. This information is then pasted into Claude’s Memory section within the settings panel, followed by selecting “Add to memory.”
Processing the imported data may require up to a full day. Users maintain full control over what information Claude retains, with options to review, modify, or delete any stored details.
Currently, ChatGPT lacks a comparable migration feature for users wanting to switch platforms. Google has announced plans for a similar tool but hasn’t released it yet.
These feature releases coincide with heightened tensions between Anthropic and military leadership. The company declined to permit its AI technology for domestic mass surveillance operations or weapons systems with complete autonomy.
In response, President Trump directed federal departments to cease all Claude usage. Defense officials additionally classified Anthropic as a supply-chain security concern.
The controversy appears to have benefited Claude’s user acquisition. The application reached the top position among free applications on Apple’s App Store, surpassing ChatGPT.
Claude’s unpaid user base has expanded beyond 60% since the start of the year. New daily registrations have increased by a factor of four during this timeframe.
This massive user influx triggered a Monday service disruption. Anthropic acknowledged the outage lasting multiple hours, attributing it to “unprecedented demand.” Normal operations resumed by late morning Eastern time.
Concurrently, OpenAI revealed intentions to implement its AI technology within the Defense Department’s secure classified infrastructure. This announcement prompted boycott calls from certain ChatGPT users.
The process begins by navigating to Claude’s settings and locating the Capabilities menu. Users then access the Memory section and select “Start import.”
Once the exported code block from another chatbot is pasted, Claude initiates data processing. Users can verify imported information under “See what Claude learned about you.”
Anthropolis has verified the import functionality supports ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. The feature is currently accessible to everyone.
