PANews reported on March 6th, citing DL News, that a South Korean cryptocurrency fraudster who had been declared dead has recently reappeared and has repaid victims approximately $60,000. The man fled to Cambodia after committing a major cryptocurrency scam in June 2019. Following an application from his family, the court issued a declaration of disappearance, effectively treating him as dead under Cambodian law. In January of this year, Cambodian authorities deported him back to South Korea, where prosecutors immediately arrested him and began processing his legal status. To compensate victims, prosecutors successfully applied to have the declaration of disappearance lifted, restoring his legal status on February 27th, allowing them to access his frozen bank and cryptocurrency accounts. Prosecutors, in collaboration with defense lawyers, victims, and exchanges, arranged the sale of his frozen digital assets, repaying victims approximately $60,000. Prosecutors stated they will rigorously investigate the case while striving to protect the human rights of those involved and resolve the dispute by recovering actual losses.
