Tunisia has invited bids to build a 300-megawatt solar power plant under a government programme to expand use of renewable energy.

The project in the southern Kebili province also comprises a 540 MWh battery storage system, the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy said.

“The ministry affirms its commitment to expediting the energy transition programme integrating renewable energies into the national energy mix, and developing energy storage technologies to strengthen the national electricity grid and ensure energy security,” the ministry said in an announcement for the bid, published on its website.

In early 2025, Tunisia awarded four new solar power projects to foreign companies for the production of 500 MW of electricity.

Tunisia’s industry, mines and energy minister Fatima Chiboub signed the contracts with Germany’s Qair Group, Norway’s Scatec, Voltalia of France and Aeolus of Japan.

The contracts were part of phase 1 of a series of solar and wind power projects with a combined generation capacity of around 1,700 MW.

The ministry has set a target to expand the use of renewable energy sources to 30 percent of the total energy mix by 2030.

Official data showed last month that renewable energy projects were among the largest recipients of foreign direct investment in 2025, along with industry and services in 2025.

Total FDI flow surged by nearly 39 percent in 2025 to reach around TD8.3 billion ($2.8 billion) from TD6 billion at the end of 2024. Renewable energy projects have attracted TD1.6 billion.
