Longtime cryptocurrency advocate Arthur Hayes says that if he had just one dollar to invest today, he would not immediately buy Bitcoin. Instead, the former BitMEX chief executive and current CIO of the Maelstrom Fund says he is waiting for a shift in global liquidity conditions before reentering the market.

In a recent interview, Hayes explained that his investment framework is tied to macroeconomic policy, particularly central bank behavior. Hayes describes Bitcoin as essentially a “credit derivative of fiat money creation,” meaning its strongest rallies coincide with growing liquidity and accommodative financial conditions.

For that reason, Hayes said he would prefer patience over immediate exposure. “If I had $1 to invest right now, would I be putting it into Bitcoin? No. I would wait,” he said, noting that his current portfolio is split roughly between 50 percent cash and 50 percent gold.

Hayes’s strategy is defensive while he watches for what he believes will be the next major catalyst for crypto markets, aggressive money printing by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The Maelstrom CIO also highlighted several macro risks that could weigh on markets before liquidity conditions turn favorable. One is escalating geopolitical tension between the United States and Iran, which could disrupt key oil infrastructure and shipping routes. Such disruptions could send energy prices sharply higher and temporarily push investors away from volatile assets like cryptocurrencies.

Hayes also warned that rapid advances in artificial intelligence could soon trigger layoffs among high-income knowledge workers in the United States. The investor estimates that 10% to 20% of these workers could face displacement within the next 3 to 6 months.

Nevertheless, Hayes remains firmly bullish over the long term. He argues that wars, fiscal deficits, and economic stress eventually force governments to expand liquidity, conditions that historically benefit scarce assets such as Bitcoin.

Based on that thesis, Hayes suggested Bitcoin could reach around $250,000 by 2026 and climb to $500,000 or even $750,000 by 2027 if global liquidity expands aggressively.
