Conservative bashes GOP senator for Iran 'sacrifice' remarks: 'Assuming facts'

A conservative journalist bashed Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) for assuming that Americans were willing to make sacrifices for President Donald Trump's war on Iran.

The Iowa Republican expressed her support for Operation Epic Fury and suggested that other Americans understood the necessity of sending U.S. troops into harm's way to protect national security, but panelists on "CNN This Morning" were highly skeptical.

"The question of are we safer now, are we safer for having done this, and I think the more existential question of how on earth did we possibly do this again?" said podcast host Noel King.

Host Audie Cornish wondered how much Americans would be willing to sacrifice for something they didn't ask for, and The Dispatch's Michael Warren said the Trump administration had never made a case for the war in the first place.

"Joni Ernst, the senator from Iowa, said the American people understand this," Warren said. "But I just don't think – that's assuming facts not in evidence. There was no argument made beforehand about why now. We've been saying this now for two weeks."

"And no opportunity for public debate," Cornish interjected.

"That's right," Warren agreed, "and that's a huge difference from past engagements. You know, everyone talks about the comparison with the Iraq war. There's a lot of debate and discussion about that before Congress voted to authorize it. None of that has happened in the run-up here, and I think even if you support the idea of of decapitating the regime, you have to wonder why now?"
