Donald Trump and his administration have approached the ongoing war with Iran with overblown "bloodlust" and a "trigger-happy" mindset, according to a new analysis from The i Paper, but there is hope from some that one top general can help to rein things in with his strait-laced respectability.

Writing for the outlet on Friday, Nick Bryant, a one-time BBC reporter with extensive experience covering American politics, highlighted the contrast offered by Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to the rest of the Trump administration when communicating about the Iran conflict. Caine, he argued, has been "something of a reassurance" amid the "cartoon" machismo of someone like Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

"Pete Hegseth, the former Fox News host turned Secretary of War, is the scene-stealer at Iran briefings, with his arsenal of rapid fire one-liners. Caine offers a much-needed voice of calm, authority and maturity," Bryant wrote.

When addressing the press last week about the state of operations in Iran, Hegseth said: “I stand before you today with one unmistakable message about Operation Epic Fury. America is winning – decisively, devastatingly, and without mercy.”

Caine, by contrast, offered a much more respectful address, honoring the lives of the American service members lost in the conflict: “First, it is with profound sadness and gratitude that I share the names of four of our six fallen heroes.”

Hegseth himself came under fire during that press conference after lambasting the "fake news media" for reporting on the American casualties of the war, claiming that they were doing so to make Trump look bad.

"As the conflict expands in the Middle East and Trump becomes more trigger-happy in terms of foreign military operations, some are hoping Caine can act as the adult in the room," Bryant explained. "Trump once described Caine as being straight out of 'central casting'. But he does not fit the caricature of a cigar-chomping, guns-blazing, four-star general. As a pilot, he was known for taking his warplanes to the extremes of their capabilities. But he is also known for mild-mannered managerialism in technically complicated jobs. Between 2021 and 2024 he served as the Pentagon’s point man at the CIA, not a posting for a loud-mouthed hothead."

Bryant further noted how Trump has attempted to paint Caine as a die-hard MAGA acolyte, in the fashion of his other staffers, claiming that the general once expressed "love" for the president and said that he would "kill for you." He also claimed that Caine owned one of Trump's signature red MAGA hats, but the chairman's colleagues have disputed that.
