The Justice Department was revealed Friday to be investigating Colombian President Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego over alleged ties to drug traffickers, a move critics warned could foreshadow an imminent U.S. military operation abroad.

Citing three insiders who spoke on the condition of anonymity, The New York Times confirmed that a criminal investigation into Petro Urrego is underway by at least two U.S. federal prosecutors’ offices, with the inquiries exploring “Mr. Petro’s possible meetings with drug traffickers,” among other things.

As noted by multiple critics, however, a criminal investigation into another South American president – Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro – preceded the Trump administration’s unprecedented attack on Venezuela, seizing its oil trade, and capturing its president.

“Completely out of control,” wrote The Tennessee Holler, the progressive news outlet founded by former Democratic congressional candidate and television personality Justin Kanew, in a social media post on X Friday.

Kyle Kulinski, a popular progressive political commentator and podcast host, was more explicit in their warning about what the criminal probe into Gustavo might suggest as it relates to the Trump administration's next move.

“This is what they did before they abducted Maduro,” Kulinski wrote to his nearly 550,000 followers on X. “They're gonna try regime change in Colombia as well. For the love of god IMPEACH HIM. 25TH AMENDMENT. HE NEEDS TO BE F---ING STOPPED. WAKE THE F--- UP.”

Former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan came to an identical conclusion.

“Remember, this is how they tried to legally justify their criminal abduction of Maduro,” he wrote to his more than 2 million followers on X.
