Rappler Talk: Filipino Navy staff admits to spying for Chinese

MANILA, Philippines – Lawrence (not his real name) was recruited into what Filipino security officials say was an espionage scheme by Chinese nationals — one that targeted young government workers with financial needs and access to sensitive security information.

Lawrence, who has worked in both the Department of National Defense and Philippine Navy, provided analysis and insight into the agencies — including analyses he now says he embellished.

The National Security Council said in early March that these spying operations linked to China had since been dismantled. Lawrence is now under military custody.
