TLDRs;

  • Tesla stock rises 3.7% after Musk unveils Terafab chip plants in Austin, focusing on AI and robotics.
  • Terafab aims to produce chips for vehicles, Optimus robots, and AI data centers in space.
  • Tesla continues Nvidia chip purchases as AI processor rollout plans accelerate by December.
  • Analysts warn $20B in capital expenditures and regulatory scrutiny could pressure near-term growth.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) shares surged 3.7% to $381.42 on Monday after Elon Musk announced Terafab, a major chip manufacturing project in Austin. The plan includes a facility for automotive and Optimus robot chips and another to supply AI data centers for SpaceX operations.

Musk stressed the importance of the project: “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips.” Investors reacted positively, viewing the initiative as a long-term play to strengthen Tesla’s technological foundation beyond car sales.

Investors Focus on Technology Over Sales

In recent months, Tesla’s market performance has been increasingly driven by its bets on AI, robotics, and self-driving software rather than traditional vehicle sales. Analysts note that a large portion of Tesla’s valuation now reflects these future-focused initiatives.

Back in January, experts highlighted that investors were largely overlooking near-term fundamentals, instead betting on Tesla’s tech ambitions, including Optimus robots and proprietary AI processors.

AI and Robotics Increase Chip Demand

Terafab is critical for Tesla’s AI roadmap. On March 19, Musk revealed that the next-generation AI6 processor could “tape out” by December, meaning the chip’s design will be finalized before production. Samsung has scheduled volume production for late 2027, but Terafab aims to ensure Tesla and SpaceX have sufficient chips for autonomous vehicles, robotics, and AI infrastructure.

Despite building Terafab, Tesla will continue bulk purchases of Nvidia chips to meet immediate demand, showing that the company is supplementing, not replacing, its supply chain.

Costs, Regulation, and Market Pressures

Monday’s stock gains were also influenced by broader market conditions, including a delay in planned U.S. strikes on Iranian power facilities, which boosted investor risk appetite. Tesla’s aggressive expansion comes with a high price tag: over $20 billion in planned capital expenditures this year, more than double 2025’s spending.

Regulatory scrutiny remains, particularly on Full Self-Driving technology, with 3.2 million vehicles under evaluation for performance in low-visibility conditions. Meanwhile, Tesla ceded its global EV sales lead to BYD in 2025, and delivery forecasts for 2026 suggest another flat or declining year. Analysts caution that while maintaining current sales levels is tolerable, a sharper drop could pose real risks.

Looking Ahead: Terafab’s Strategic Impact

Terafab signals Tesla’s commitment to securing its technological future and reducing supply chain vulnerability. By focusing on proprietary chip production, the company aims to strengthen its lead in AI-driven vehicles and robotics while supporting SpaceX’s data center needs.

Investors will be closely monitoring production milestones, capital spending, and regulatory developments, as the long-term success of Terafab could redefine Tesla’s growth trajectory and valuation in the coming years.
