Munro And Sewing Continue Their Dominance Of The 2025 Association Of Pickleball Players Season

Hot on the heels of the Women’s Open in Columbus, the Association of Pickleball Players (APP) headed south to its headquarters in Fort Lauderdale to compete the 2025 AARP Open onsite at the Fort. When you have a custom-made facility like the Fort, you tend to use it, and this is the APP’s third event this year at the facility (following January’s debut Humana Fort Lauderdale Open and then April’s similarly named Fort Lauderdale Open. The site is certainly a bonus for the huge Florida-based contingent of pickleball professionals we have in the sport right now, and this was seen in the draws, with nearly 600 players playing, including a huge percentage of the top Senior pros, who were competing one of the few senior “majors” of the year.

With that said, let’s recap the action.

Men’s Pro Singles Recap

New APP No. 1 Singles player Ammar Wazir, who has won the last two singles titles on tour, cruised into the final from the top half without much trouble. One cannot say the same about the rest of the top seeds in the draw; the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 seeds (Foster, Kawka, and Camron) were all upset before even getting to the quarters (by Lamacchio, Diamond, and Cangelosi respectively). John Cangelosi continued his upsetting ways, taking out No. 5 Howells in the quarters before falling in the semis to settle for the Bronze.

In the final, Wazir topped Dusty Boyer, the No. 7 seed but who has now medaled in the last three events and who is rising fast.

Women’s Pro Singles Recap

Always beware the “dead-last” seeded player in Pickleball pro draws: you just never know how good they might be, since they’re likely last due to having no points, not necessarily being the least-talented. This weekend in the Women’s singles draw, the two highest seeds not to secure a bye in the round of 32 found out the hard way, as No. 4 Turkovic and No. 5 Hendrey were ousted early by Canadian Jada Bui and Australian Seone Mendez respectively. Bui and Mendez ended up playing for a spot in the semis, won by eventual bronze medalist Mendez to give her a medal in her APP debut.

In the final, the tourney’s two top seeded players battled it out, and No. 1 Sofia Sewing continued her dominance of the APP pro singles circuit. winning a 3-game match against No. 3 Bobbi Oshiro for her third straight title. Oshiro remains shut out of singles gold on tour, with her seventh podium and third runner-up finish.

Mixed Pro Doubles Recap

Kudos to the draw maker for the Mixed Pro Doubles division this weekend, as seven of the top eight seeded teams advanced into the quarters as expected, and then the draw went completely “chalk” the rest of the way. No. 1 seeds Megan Fudge & Jack Munro took their second straight pro title in a row, downing former No. 1 pair Bobbi Oshiro & Will Howells in the final. Great Lakes Open gold medalists Sewing & Diamond settled for Bronze.

Men’s Pro Doubles Recap

The Howells-Munro gravy train is back in action on tour after a summer hiatus. The No. 1 pair cruised through the draw without dropping a game to claim their seventh title of 2025. In the final, they beat surprised silver medalists Ryler Deheart & Kyle Koszuta, who survived three-game tests in each of their first three early rounds to claw their way into the final. After two gold medals earlier this year, Richard Livornese Jr. & Tanner Tomassi have to settle for bronze for the second tournament running.

Women’s Pro Doubles Recap

Megan Fudge traded in her normal partner (the absent Jill Braverman) for Amanda Hendry, but they couldn’t hold off the surging pair of No. 4 Sewing & Bates, who topped them in the semis and then took the gold medal final over No. 2 Maddox & Harris. Its Sofia Sewing’s third doubles gold medal on tour, continuing her rise up the doubles rankings to go with her top spot in Singles, and she finishes one Mixed bronze away from a Triple Crown.

AARP Champions Pro Competition Quick Recap

• Men’s Champions Pro Singles: Virginian Youssef Bouzidi won his 5th Singles title of 2025 in his debut season, vanquishing the two prior top-dogs in Johansson in the semis and Jardim in the finals.
• Women’s Champions Pro Singles: Endara got an upset over Whitwell, but couldn’t top No. 1 Karin Ptaszek-Kochis, who wins for the first time since NYC.
• Men’s Champions Pro Doubles: Top seeds Oncins & Jardim were upset early, which cleared a path for No. 4 Bouzidi & Cote to take the title
• Women’s Champions Pro Doubles: Whitwell & Simon held serve as the top seeds and won the stacked Champions Women’s Pro Doubles title.
• Mixed Champions Pro Doubles: Five time defending Mixed pro champs Oncins & Whitwell were dethroned in the final by veterans Morariu & Bagby.

AARP Masters Pro Competition Quick Recap

• Men’s Masters Pro Singles: Scott Greenberg won his first singles gold, and Virginia-based pro Joseph Apodaca won his first career APP medal, in a weekend of firsts for the Masters pros.
• Men’s Masters Pro Doubles: Vincent Van Patten got his first career APP gold, teaming with Todd Murphy to take the stacked pro doubles draw.
• Women’s Masters Pro Doubles: Top seeds Anna Shirley & Beth Bellamy won their 4th title of the season together.
• Mixed Masters Pro Doubles: Mark Wilder & Heather Iffert upset the top seed in the semis and held on for the gold.
