The previous deal was set to expire in the summer of 2027. The 39-year-old head coach arrived in Munich from Burnley ahead of the 2024/25 season and won the Bundesliga title in his first season with the club. “I’m grateful, honored, and would like to thank FC Bayern for the trust and the working environment they’ve given me from day one,” Kompany said in a statement released by the club. “It feels like I’ve been here a lot longer and that I know the club well. It’s been a great experience so far. We’ve started on a wonderful journey. Let’s keep working hard and celebrate much more success!” Although Kompany had an incredible start to the season with seven straight wins to kick off the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign, including a 2-1 win over rivals Borussia Dortmund last Saturday, the contract renewal at this stage came as a surprise. Indeed, there were no usual rumors in any of the major news outlets in Munich, as the announcement came almost out of nowhere. While perhaps surprising, the contract renewal is also well deserved. Bayern Munich has renewed the contract with head coach Vincent Kompany until the end of the 2028/29 season.

Let’s keep working hard and celebrate much more success!”

Although Kompany had an incredible start to the season with seven straight wins to kick off the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign, including a 2-1 win over rivals Borussia Dortmund last Saturday, the contract renewal at this stage came as a surprise. Indeed, there were no usual rumors in any of the major news outlets in Munich, as the announcement came almost out of nowhere.

While perhaps surprising, the contract renewal is also well deserved. Kompany has not only won his first seven Bundesliga games, but Bayern has also won the Franz-Beckenbauer Cup against Stuttgart (2-1), beat Wehen-Wiesbaden in the DFB Pokal (3-2), and kicked off the Champions League with two wins.

“The contract extension with Vincent Kompany is a strong vote of confidence from the club after the great job he’s done up to now, as well as a clear sign for continuity and stability at FC Bayern,” Bayern president Herbert Hainer said. “Vincent is held in high regard by the players, the club management, and the fans. We’re happy about the early extension of our cooperation.”

It is certainly a vote of confidence, but one that is well earned. According to Transfermarkt, only three coaches in charge for a season or more have had a better points-per-game average than Kompany (2.33). Those coaches were Hansi Flick from 2019 to 2021 (2.53), Jupp Heynckes from 2011 to 2013 (2.43), and Pep Guardiola (2.41).

More importantly, the players seem to enjoy playing for the 39-year-old. Internally, both Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies highlighted their development under Kompany as a major reason for staying at Bayern. Furthermore, the likes of Dayot Upamecano have made a big step forward under the guidance of their coach.

Even more senior players like Harry Kane and Joshua Kimmich seem to have find another level under the Belgian bench boss. This year, Kompany has added another layer, including more youth players like Lennart Karl and Wisdom Mike, more regularly in the lineup.

“Vincent Kompany has brought the fun back to FC Bayern—and the spark has really caught on,” Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said. “Under his leadership, a real team has grown, playing dominant and attractive football. The extension is also a signal to our players. Moreover, I like Vincent’s level-headedness. He never pushes himself into the limelight and makes our players better with his meticulous work.”

Perhaps that was exactly what was needed at Bayern. After all, acquiring Kompany was a stroke of luck in the first place. Bayern had advanced discussions with Ralf Rangnick last summer and also tried to convince Thomas Tuchel to stay at some point.

The Rekordmeister also spoke to a few other candidates, who ultimately didn’t join the club. With that in mind, Kompany was given an opportunity out of nowhere and made the most out of it.

Indeed, the contract extension is also a vote of confidence in the board member of sport, Max Eberl. Eberl was under significant pressure to sign a head coach in the summer of 2024 and was heavily criticized for the manner in which the coaching search was conducted.

“I’m delighted about this extension,” Eberl said. “When we appointed Vinny, we had a clear vision of our shared path, and he quickly proved that he would help FC Bayern move forward—both on and off the pitch. He’s a role model who unites players, fans, and everyone at the club, and we want to build something long-term with him.”

Is there are risk? Without a doubt. A contract extension also means that it will be more difficult to go separate ways should things unravel. But at the moment, it seems unlikely for things to go wrong, and if anything, this will give the club further stability.
