What Is a Basis Trade in Crypto?

A basis trade is a trading strategy that tries to profit from the price difference between a crypto asset in the spot market and a related derivative such as a futures contract or perpetual contract.

In crypto, the basis usually means the difference between the derivative price and the spot price of the same underlying asset.

If a Bitcoin futures contract trades above the spot price of Bitcoin, the basis is positive.

If the futures contract trades below the spot price, the basis is negative.

A classic crypto basis trade is also called a cash-and-carry trade.

In a cash-and-carry trade, a trader buys the spot asset and sells the futures contract at the same time.

The goal is to capture the spread when the futures price converges toward the spot price at settlement.

The BIS crypto carry research describes crypto carry as the return from going long in the spot market while selling short in the futures contract.

Basis trades are often described as market-neutral because the long spot position and short derivative position can offset much of the directional price movement.

However, market-neutral does not mean risk-free.

A basis trade can still lose money because of fees, slippage, margin calls, liquidation, funding-rate changes, stablecoin risk, custody risk, settlement problems, and execution mistakes.

Why Basis Trades Matter in Crypto

Basis trades matter because they show how crypto spot markets and derivative markets are connected.

When traders strongly want leveraged long exposure, crypto futures or perpetual contracts may trade above spot prices.

This creates a positive basis that cash-and-carry traders may try to capture.

When traders strongly want short exposure or liquidity becomes stressed, derivatives may trade below spot prices.

This creates a negative basis and changes the risk-reward profile of the strategy.

The BIS research notes that crypto carry can be large and volatile compared with carry in many traditional financial assets.

This is important because a large basis can attract arbitrage capital, hedge funds, market makers, and advanced individual traders.

At the same time, persistent basis shows that arbitrage is not frictionless.

If the trade were truly easy and risk-free, arbitrageurs would close the spread quickly.

In reality, capital limits, margin rules, trading venue risk, settlement rules, custody limits, and regulatory constraints can keep the basis open.

A basis trade is therefore both a trading strategy and a signal about market structure.

How a Crypto Basis Trade Works

A simple basis trade starts with a trader observing that a futures contract is trading above the spot price of the underlying crypto asset.

The trader buys the spot asset.

The trader then sells the futures contract for the same notional amount.

If the futures contract settles at or near the spot price, the trader may earn the original spread after costs.

For example, assume a crypto asset trades at 100 in the spot market while a futures contract expiring later trades at 105.

A trader may buy the spot asset at 100 and short the futures contract at 105.

If the futures price converges to the spot price at settlement, the trader expects to capture the difference between 105 and 100.

This example ignores fees, funding, margin, tax, financing, and slippage.

Real basis trades must include all of those costs.

The trade also requires both legs to stay open until convergence or until the trader closes the position.

If one leg breaks, the trader can become exposed to directional market movement.

Spot-Futures Basis

Spot-futures basis is the difference between the spot price of a crypto asset and the price of a futures contract on that asset.

A positive basis means the futures contract trades above spot.

A negative basis means the futures contract trades below spot.

Positive basis is common when traders are willing to pay a premium for leveraged long exposure.

Negative basis can appear when market stress, hedging demand, or short demand pushes futures prices below spot.

The basis can be quoted in price terms or annualized percentage terms.

Annualized basis helps compare contracts with different maturities.

A five percent spread over one month is very different from a five percent spread over one year.

Annualization converts the spread into a yearly rate so traders can compare opportunities.

However, annualized basis can be misleading if the position cannot be held safely or if costs change before settlement.

Cash-and-Carry Trade

A cash-and-carry trade is the most common form of crypto basis trade.

The trader buys the spot asset and sells a futures contract against it.

The spot asset is the cash leg.

The futures short is the carry leg.

The trader is trying to carry the asset until the spread closes or the futures contract settles.

This trade can reduce directional price exposure because losses on the spot asset may be offset by gains on the short futures position, and gains on the spot asset may be offset by losses on the short futures position.

The expected return comes mainly from the basis, not from guessing whether the asset price will rise or fall.

That is why the strategy is often called market-neutral.

Still, the trader must manage both legs carefully.

If the futures short is liquidated while the spot asset remains open, the trader may be left with an unhedged spot position.

Reverse Cash-and-Carry Trade

A reverse cash-and-carry trade is the opposite of a normal cash-and-carry trade.

It may be used when the futures contract trades below the spot price.

In a simplified version, a trader sells or borrows the spot asset and buys the futures contract.

The goal is to capture convergence when the discounted futures price rises toward spot at settlement.

This strategy is harder for many crypto traders because shorting spot assets can require borrowing.

Borrowing can be expensive, limited, or unavailable.

Borrow rates can change quickly during market stress.

The trader may also face recall risk if borrowed assets must be returned earlier than expected.

Reverse basis trades can be useful, but they usually involve more operational complexity than buying spot and shorting futures.

Most beginners should understand normal cash-and-carry before studying reverse basis trades.

Basis Trade With Perpetual Contracts

A basis trade can also use perpetual contracts instead of fixed-expiry futures.

A perpetual contract has no scheduled expiration date.

Because it does not expire, it usually relies on a funding-rate mechanism to keep the contract price close to the spot price.

The CFTC 2026 policy statement on perpetual contracts discusses the listing of perpetual contracts and notes that perpetual contracts have unique characteristics that can vary based on the underlying asset.

In a perpetual basis trade, a trader may buy spot and short the perpetual contract.

If funding is positive, short perpetual holders may receive funding payments from long holders.

If funding turns negative, short perpetual holders may pay funding instead.

This makes a perpetual basis trade different from a fixed-expiry futures basis trade.

The return is not locked by one settlement date.

It depends on funding rates, price convergence, position maintenance, margin, and how long the trader holds the trade.

Funding Rates

Funding rates are periodic payments between long and short traders in perpetual contract markets.

When the perpetual price is above the spot price, funding is often positive and long traders may pay short traders.
