BEP-20 is the main fungible token standard used on BNB Smart Chain.

In cryptocurrency, a fungible token is a token where each unit is interchangeable with another unit of the same token.

A BEP-20 token can represent a stablecoin, governance token, game currency, reward point, wrapped asset, utility token, payment token, or tokenized claim.

The official BEP-20 specification says the standard defines an interface for creating token contracts on BNB Smart Chain.

The same specification says BEP-20 is derived from the ERC-20 token standard and provides basic functionality for transfers, approvals, and third-party spending.

This means BEP-20 tokens follow a familiar smart contract pattern that many wallets, applications, explorers, and developer tools can understand.

Instead of every token using a different structure, BEP-20 gives developers a shared interface for balances, transfers, allowances, supply tracking, and events.

For users, BEP-20 is often seen when selecting a network for deposits, withdrawals, wallet transfers, swaps, or stablecoin movement.
