Coinbase scores 3.4 out of 5 on our six-dimension scorecard as of September 2026, leading on deposits and withdrawals and competitive on security and disclosure, and trailing on fees, where a simple-screen limit buy can stack up to $28.75 on $1,000 before the spread; it suits US, UK, EEA and Canadian beginners and compliance-first holders, and it is the wrong pick for fee-sensitive active traders and for anyone who wants to read the full rate card before signing in.

Key Takeaways
  • Coinbase scores 3.4 out of 5 overall, with a 5.0 on deposits and withdrawals and a 2.0 on fees and costs, its lowest mark.
  • A $1,000 simple limit buy on Coinbase can cost up to $28.75 in published fees plus an unpublished spread, against $0.50 as a taker on MEXC and nothing as a maker, and Coinbase One does not waive the 1% limit-order execution fee.
  • Coinbase Advanced removes the spread by trading the order book, and its complete tier table is shown only after sign-in, so entry-tier figures quoted by third parties are not verified here.
  • On 15 May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that bribed overseas support contractors had copied account data for less than 1% of monthly transacting users, with no passwords, keys or funds exposed, reimbursement pledged and remediation estimated at $180 million to $400 million.
  • Coinbase files audited accounts with the SEC, holds a New York BitLicense, became a CSA Restricted Dealer in Canada in April 2024 and received a MiCA authorisation from Luxembourg's CSSF in June 2025.
  • Readers in the US, UK, EEA and Canada have a licensed option in Coinbase and no account at MEXC; readers elsewhere who want one published price per pair can compare MEXC's rates below.

Which Coinbase Price Are You Paying: Simple, One or Advanced?

Coinbase runs three pricing models under one brand, a simple buy screen with an unpublished spread plus a 1% limit-order fee plus a Coinbase fee of up to 1.875%, a Coinbase One subscription that caps the standard fee but not the 1% limit-order fee, and Coinbase Advanced, an order book with no spread whose full tier table appears only after sign-in, and most of what people dislike about Coinbase is the first of those three.
Most people who search for a Coinbase review are not unhappy with the product.
They are reacting to a fee breakdown they saw on the order preview right before tapping confirm.
Coinbase's own pricing disclosure says the Coinbase fee depends on payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction and asset, and that fees may vary for similar transactions.
The free fix, for a Coinbase customer who wants to stay, is Coinbase Advanced, which removes the spread without moving any assets.
The rest of this review scores the platform dimension by dimension and says which of the three paths each number belongs to.

How We Scored Coinbase

This review scores Coinbase from 0 to 5 on six equally weighted dimensions: fees and costs, asset coverage, derivatives, security and custody, deposits and withdrawals, and customer support.
Every figure comes from Coinbase's own pricing and fees disclosures, help centre, derivatives documentation, regulatory filings or terms, from a regulator, from CoinGecko exchange data, or from an established news organisation, and each carries a retrieval date.
Regional availability and regulatory standing are disclosed but never scored, because a platform is either usable where you live or it is not.
MEXC operates a competing exchange, and the full scoring rules, source hierarchy and conflict-of-interest policy are published in our exchange review methodology.
The support score is based on published channels only; our timed-ticket test for this platform is scheduled for the next review cycle.

Where Is Coinbase Available, and Where Is MEXC?

Coinbase serves the United States, the United Kingdom, the EEA, Canada and Australia under local authorisations and halted its Japan operations in January 2023, while MEXC does not onboard residents of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the EEA, Singapore or Hong Kong, so most Coinbase customers cannot act on the MEXC comparisons in this review at all, and every MEXC figure below is information for readers elsewhere.
Coinbase
Coinbase is a US public company that files audited accounts with the SEC, holds state licences across the United States including a New York BitLicense, and states in its pricing disclosure that it has no payment-for-order-flow arrangements with market makers.
MEXC
MEXC does not serve residents of the United States or the United Kingdom, and readers there should use a platform licensed by their local regulator.
As of 17 September 2026, MEXC is not authorised under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation and appears on ESMA's register of non-compliant entities following a September 2025 decision by the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets; readers in the EU and EEA should treat a MiCA-authorised platform as the appropriate option.
MEXC's user agreement also prohibits Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China, and the full list is in our restricted countries guide.

Coinbase Scorecard 2026: Six Scores and One Overall Figure

Coinbase earns 3.4 out of 5 overall, with a 5.0 on deposits and withdrawals, 4.0 on security and custody, 3.5 on customer support, 3.0 on asset coverage and on derivatives, and 2.0 on fees and costs, a profile built for bank-funded beginners and compliance-first holders rather than for active traders.

What Does Coinbase Charge in Fees?

Fees and costs: 2.0 out of 5.
On Coinbase's simple buy and sell screen the quoted price includes a spread that Coinbase does not publish as a fixed rate, a simple limit order adds a separate execution fee of 1% of the trade, and Coinbase may also charge a Coinbase fee of up to 1.875% depending on payment method, so a $1,000 simple limit buy can reach $28.75 in published fees before the spread.
Coinbase One, the subscription that waives the standard trading fee up to a monthly cap across its membership tiers, explicitly does not waive the 1% limit-order fee, and the spread still applies.
Coinbase Advanced removes the spread because you trade the order book directly, and its help centre says the complete Advanced fee structure is shown after you sign in.
Third-party reviews in 2026 report Coinbase Advanced entry-tier rates of up to 0.60% taker, and we have not confirmed that figure on an open Coinbase page, so it does not appear in our tables.
One more line item matters for stablecoin holders: Coinbase charges a 0.01% processing fee on USDT withdrawals, capped at 20 USDT, on top of the network fee.
Our methodology prices the same trades on every platform, so the table below prices one $1,000 purchase and a year of a common habit, and states where Coinbase's Advanced rate was not verified.
Scenario
Coinbase
MEXC
One $1,000 simple limit buy
Up to $28.75 in published fees, which is $10.00 in execution fee plus up to $18.75 in Coinbase fee, before the spread
$0.50 as a taker at 0.05%; $0.40 with the MX deduction; $0 as a maker
$500 twice a month for a year, $12,000, as simple limit orders
$120 in execution fees plus up to $225 in Coinbase fees, up to $345 a year, before the spread
$6 a year as a taker; $4.80 with the MX deduction; $0 as a maker
The same trades on Coinbase Advanced
No spread; entry-tier maker and taker rates shown after sign-in and not verified in this review
Same as above, on a public per-pair schedule
Verified as of 3 September 2026 against Coinbase's pricing and fees disclosures and MEXC's fee schedule; spreads, funding and network fees are excluded, and MEXC's figures apply to readers outside its restricted markets.
The score is 2.0 rather than 2.5 because three separate charges stack on the simple screen, one of them has no published figure, and the order-book schedule cannot be read before opening an account, which are the two things a fee table is supposed to prevent.

How Broad Is Coinbase's Asset Coverage?

Asset coverage: 3.0 out of 5.
CoinGecko tracked 403 coins across 519 spot pairs on Coinbase Exchange as of 3 September 2026, Coinbase reviews assets before listing them and publishes a listing roadmap, and the Coinbase app can also route trades to decentralised exchanges, so the number of things you can buy through the app is larger than the number listed on its own venue.
We do not score platforms on self-reported coin totals, and the tracked CoinGecko number is the one we cite.
The curated policy is a real strength for a regulated venue and a long-term holder, and a real limitation if the token you want is not there yet.
CoinGecko's 2026 perpetuals report, which counted 879 new perpetual contracts on MEXC between January 2025 and April 2026, does not include Coinbase in its count.
Coinbase is not among the eight platforms in our listing disclosure index, so its delisting notice periods and withdrawal windows have not been measured by us, and that gap is stated rather than filled with an estimate.

How Strong Is Coinbase for Derivatives?

Derivatives: 3.0 out of 5.
Coinbase offers perpetual futures to eligible non-US users through Coinbase Advanced at a maximum of 10x leverage per its developer documentation, showed a promotional 0% maker and 0.03% taker on its derivatives page on 3 September 2026, is moving its international derivatives to a Deribit-powered gateway from 9 September 2026, and in the United States rolled out a simplified in-app futures experience alongside stock trading and Kalshi prediction markets on 17 December 2025.
The 10x cap is a feature for a conservative trader and a limit for an active one, and the promotional rate is exactly that, a promotion rather than a schedule.
The December 2025 US rollout, as reported by CNBC, is the reason a US user now has futures, stocks and prediction markets in one Coinbase account.
The score sits at 3.0 because the product exists in both regions with published caps, and because its non-US terms are in transition and its US version is a simplified experience rather than a full derivatives venue.
A leverage number without its position band is marketing rather than a specification, and Coinbase's published 10x cap is one of the few in this series that needs no such caveat.

Is Coinbase Safe? Security, Custody and the 2025 Data Breach

Security and custody: 4.0 out of 5.
Coinbase publishes audited financial statements as a listed company, holds a New York BitLicense among its US authorisations, disclosed on 15 May 2025 that criminals had bribed overseas support contractors to copy account data for less than 1% of monthly transacting users, with no passwords, private keys or funds exposed, refused a $20 million ransom demand and pledged to reimburse customers tricked by the resulting social-engineering attacks, which is an incident handled in the open and the reason the score sits at 4.0 rather than higher.
Coinbase does not publish a crypto-native proof of reserves, and its custody case rests on audited public-company filings instead, which is a different kind of evidence rather than a weaker one.
Our rule for this dimension is consistent across the series: an incident inside the last two years that exposed data rather than funds, with reimbursement pledged, on a platform with audited disclosure, scores 4.0.
One practical note belongs here because the search results for Coinbase support are full of fake phone numbers: no exchange support agent needs your two-factor code or your recovery phrase, and support should be reached only through the app or the help centre rather than a number found in a search result.
For the full incident record across the industry, our crypto exchange hacks database lists 81 breaches with their reimbursement outcomes.

How Easy Are Deposits and Withdrawals on Coinbase?

Deposits and withdrawals: 5.0 out of 5.
Coinbase runs free ACH in the United States, wires, cards and PayPal in supported regions, which is the smoothest on-ramp in this series if your money starts and ends in a bank account, and it is the dimension where no reader group in its home markets faces a material gap.
The one line item to price is the 0.01% processing fee on USDT withdrawals, capped at 20 USDT, on top of the network fee.
Verification tiers and limits are set per region and shown inside the account, and identity verification is required before funding, as on every licensed venue in this series.

What Is Coinbase Customer Support Like?

Customer support: 3.5 out of 5.
Coinbase publishes a help centre, in-app support and phone support channels, and we have capped the score below 4.0 until our own timed ticket test runs, because a published channel is a promise and a timed reply is a measurement.
Our rule is one non-urgent ticket per platform per review cycle, timed from submission to a reply that answers the question, and Coinbase's test is scheduled for the next cycle.
Third-party review sites carry a large volume of complaints about slow responses for non-subscribers, and our methodology does not count aggregate star ratings, so those complaints are noted here rather than scored.

Coinbase Benefits and Limitations

Benefits
  • Local authorisations in the United States, the United Kingdom, the EEA, Canada and Australia, including a New York BitLicense and a MiCA authorisation from Luxembourg's CSSF.
  • Audited public-company filings with the SEC and a stated no-payment-for-order-flow policy.
  • Free ACH in the United States, wires, cards and PayPal in supported regions.
  • For US users, commission-free stocks, Kalshi prediction markets, in-app futures and the Base ecosystem in one account.
Limitations
  • A simple-screen fee stack of an unpublished spread, a 1% limit-order fee and a Coinbase fee of up to 1.875%, which Coinbase One only partly waives.
  • An Advanced order-book schedule shown only after sign-in.
  • A curated catalogue of 403 tracked coins and no published listing count.
  • A May 2025 data breach through bribed support contractors, and no crypto-native proof of reserves.

Who Coinbase Is For, and Who Should Look Elsewhere

Coinbase is the right pick for US, UK, EEA and Canadian beginners and compliance-first holders who fund by bank transfer and value licensing and disclosure above trading cost, and it is the wrong pick for fee-sensitive active traders, for new-listing hunters, and for anyone who wants to read the full rate card before signing in.
Coinbase is the right pick if:
  • You live in the United States, the United Kingdom, the EEA, Canada or Australia and want an exchange authorised where you live.
  • You fund by bank transfer and value free ACH and audited disclosure over the fee on a single trade.
  • You want stocks, prediction markets and crypto in one account as a US user.
Look elsewhere if:
  • You trade often and the simple-screen fee stack is a number you notice, in which case Coinbase Advanced is the first place to look before any switch.
  • You want tokens that Coinbase's curated roadmap has not reached.
  • You want an order-book schedule you can read before opening an account.
Readers in the first group who want a second licensed option can read our comparison of Kraken alternatives, which covers the other fiat-rail exchanges on the same data standard.
Readers in the second group who live outside the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the EEA, Singapore and Hong Kong can compare MEXC's published rates in the section below, and our comparison of Coinbase alternatives covers nine exchanges ranked by published fees.

The MEXC View

MEXC operates a competing exchange, and this section is where our own position is stated rather than implied.
Coinbase beats MEXC on licensing, on audited disclosure, on fiat rails, and on the US product map, and for a US, UK, EEA or Canadian resident those four points settle the question before fees enter it, because MEXC does not onboard residents of those markets at all.
Where MEXC is the answer, for readers outside its restricted markets, is the number of prices and the visibility of the price.
MEXC's fee page lists every spot pair with its own maker and taker row, readable without an account, at 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker on major pairs, with the 20% MX deduction taking the taker rate to 0.0400% with no subscription and no lock-up.
A $1,000 buy costs $0.50 as a taker and nothing as a maker, against up to $28.75 before the spread on Coinbase's simple screen, and a year of $500 twice a month costs $6 against up to $345.
CoinGecko tracked 1,633 coins on MEXC against 403 on Coinbase Exchange on 3 September 2026, and MEXC listed 879 new perpetual contracts between January 2025 and April 2026 in CoinGecko's count.
Two boundaries keep the fee claim honest.
The zero applies to spot maker orders and to web and app futures orders, not to API-routed futures, which MEXC prices at 0.06% maker and 0.08% taker.
And the saving is available only to readers outside the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the EEA, Singapore and Hong Kong, which excludes most of Coinbase's customer base.
MEXC's fiat access runs through third-party routes and P2P rather than free ACH, MEXC holds none of the licences named in this review, and MEXC's monthly proof of reserves, audited by Hacken, is the kind of evidence a public company replaces with audited filings.
Our review desk's verdict is that Coinbase sells a licence and a bank rail with a fee stack attached, and MEXC sells one order-book price with no licence in Coinbase's markets attached, and a reader's address decides the question before their trading style does.
The head-to-head numbers are in our MEXC vs Coinbase comparison.

It caps the standard trading fee up to a monthly volume limit by membership tier.

Can I use Coinbase in the UK, the EU or Canada?
Yes, Coinbase serves all three under local authorisations, and MEXC does not onboard residents of any of them.
