For traders outside South Korea, MEXC is the better choice in this comparison, because Bithumb's account opening runs through a Korean real-name bank account and the fee schedule you came to compare is one you will never be billed under.
Korean residents should use a domestically registered exchange, and MEXC is not one.

Key Takeaways
  • MEXC is our top pick here for traders outside South Korea, on access, listing breadth and a maker rate with no expiry date.
  • Bithumb's widely quoted 0.04% is an application that lapses 30 days after you make it, and the rate reverts to 0.25%.
  • While that application is live Bithumb's 0.04% undercuts our standard 0.0500% taker rate, and MX fee deduction brings MEXC to 0.0400% and ties.
  • The gap that never depends on renewal is the maker side, where MEXC charges 0.0000% and Bithumb charges its taker rate.
  • CoinGecko tracked 479 coins on Bithumb against 1,627 on MEXC on 4 September 2026, quoted almost entirely in Korean won.
  • Bithumb holds a South Korean VASP registration that MEXC does not hold anywhere.

Most Readers Cannot Open a Bithumb Account at All

Some reviews still describe Bithumb as open to traders worldwide.
That does not match its current sign-up requirements.
Korean rules route exchange onboarding through real-name verified bank accounts, and completing sign-up in practice means holding three things at once.
You need Korean residency documentation, a Korean mobile number registered in your own name, and a real-name account at the partner bank.
Miss any one of them and the flow does not complete.
This single fact reorders every other consideration in a comparison like this one, because fee tables and coin counts only matter after an account exists.
The direction of travel points the same way.
On 3 August 2026 Bithumb published a listing roadmap targeting a 2028 IPO, its third published timeline, with internal control work and an accounting transition running through 2026.
That roadmap points at a domestic listing rather than at international retail expansion.

The MEXC View

MEXC publishes this article and places itself in the comparison, so the reasoning is stated here rather than assumed.
Our position: once access is the binding constraint, the ranking follows from three published numbers, which are 1,627 listed coins against 479, USDT quoting against Korean won, and a 0.0000% maker rate against a rate that expires every 30 days.
Here is where we lose, and we would rather name it than have you find it.
Bithumb holds a South Korean virtual asset service provider registration under a comprehensive national framework, and CoinGecko records MEXC's strongest sourced licence as an International Crypto License from the Comoros, describing that framework as defined but unproven.
Bithumb's applied taker rate of 0.04% is lower than our standard 0.0500% taker rate.
Bithumb charges nothing to withdraw USDT over the Tron network, and nothing at all for transfers between Bithumb accounts.
And if you live in Korea, we are not a legal option for you, which the regulatory notice at the end states in full.
How we score these dimensions is set out in our review methodology.

Why MEXC Is Our Top Pick Outside Korea: The Evidence First

The 0.04% Figure Is an Application, Not a Default

Many third-party pages describe Bithumb's fees as a range running from 0.04% to 0.25%, presented as though it were a volume ladder.
It is not one.
Bithumb's own fee page shows the Korean won market at a standard 0.25%, struck through and replaced by 0.04% for customers who apply through the benefits menu, and the BTC market struck through to a fee-free state.
Three details from that page change how the number should be read.
The 0.04% rate applies for 30 days from the date of application rather than indefinitely.
Customers who do not apply are charged the standard rate.
Maker and taker are priced identically, so there is no rebate at all for providing liquidity with a resting limit order.
None of this makes Bithumb expensive while the application is live.
It makes the low number conditional, and conditional pricing is worth understanding before you build a trading routine on top of it.

What a Single Lapsed Month Costs

Run $500,000 of monthly spot volume through both schedules and the picture is more interesting than a simple win.
With the application live, Bithumb's 0.04% costs $200 a month, or $2,400 a year.
MEXC's standard 0.0500% taker rate costs $3,000 a year, so on taker orders alone Bithumb is genuinely cheaper by $600.
Enable MX fee deduction and MEXC's taker rate becomes 0.0400%, which lands at exactly $2,400 and ties.
Now the number that matters more than either of those.
Forget to renew for a single month and that month costs $1,250 instead of $200.
One lapse takes the year to $3,450, which is above MEXC's standard rate for the same trades, and the failure is administrative rather than a trading decision.
The gap that never depends on renewal is on the other side of the book.
The same volume placed as resting limit orders costs $2,400 a year at Bithumb's applied rate and nothing at all on MEXC, because 0.0000% maker is the standing schedule.
Two boundaries on our own pricing, because a zero with conditions is not worth quoting.
The MX deduction is a 20% discount rather than a halving, and API futures orders are priced separately at 0.060% maker and 0.080% taker effective 1 June 2026, as our fee guide explains.

Breadth, Quote Currency and the Missing Hedge

Reading both exchange pages on CoinGecko on 4 September 2026, Bithumb showed 479 coins across 489 pairs and MEXC showed 1,627 coins across 2,019 pairs.
A coin count on its own is a weak comparison, because a long tail of illiquid listings is not an asset.
What decides this one is breadth combined with quote currency.
For a trader outside Korea a won-quoted pair is barely a listing at all, because reaching it requires a currency you have no compliant way to hold.
Then there is the hedge.
Bithumb lists no futures and no margin trading, and CoinGecko records margin trading as unavailable.
MEXC runs USDT-margined perpetuals from 0.000% maker, with BTCUSDT carrying a Special Rate taker of 0.020%, in the same account as the spot position.
If you want to hedge a Korean-listed narrative token rather than only buy it, Bithumb cannot be your only account under any circumstances, and our derivatives exchange comparison covers what the alternatives charge.

MEXC vs Bithumb Compared: Six Dimensions That Decide It

The Verdict, Dimension by Dimension

Access: MEXC, decisively.
One platform requires a Korean bank account and the other does not, which settles the comparison for almost everyone reading it.
Maker pricing: MEXC.
0.0000% with no renewal step against a rate that has to be reapplied for every 30 days.
Applied taker pricing: Bithumb.
0.04% is lower than our standard 0.0500%, and only ties once MX deduction is enabled, which is a real point in Bithumb's favour rather than a rounding error.
Breadth and quoting: MEXC.
1,627 coins in currencies you can fund, against 479 quoted almost entirely in won.
Derivatives: MEXC, by default.
Bithumb offers none, so hedging means a second account regardless of which platform you start from.
Supervision: Bithumb.
A Korean registration under a comprehensive national framework is a standard MEXC does not meet anywhere, and readers who filter on supervision first should stop here.

Where Bithumb Wins

Four things about Bithumb hold up under scrutiny.
Regulatory standing.
Bithumb is a registered Korean virtual asset service provider operating under real-name banking, anti-money-laundering obligations and client asset protection requirements.
Applied taker pricing.
While the application is live, 0.04% beats our standard taker rate outright.
Withdrawal costs on the right network.
USDT withdrawals over Tron are free with a minimum of 0.000001, and transfers between Bithumb accounts carry no fee at all.
Incident handling in February 2026.
The mistaken credit described in the timeline below saw affected accounts frozen within about 40 minutes, and 99.7% was recovered.
The shortfall was covered from company funds, compensation was offered to affected users, and the recovery figure was published within two days.
One more honest note on liquidity, because the readings move.
CoinGecko recorded Bithumb's average bid-ask spread at 0.816% and MEXC's at 0.783% on 4 September 2026, while rating Bithumb's overall liquidity low and MEXC's moderate, so neither platform can claim this dimension outright.

The Withdrawal Fee Almost Every Comparison Gets Wrong

One correction is worth more than a paragraph of general advice, because it appears on nearly every page covering Bithumb.
The widely quoted 0.001 BTC figure is the minimum withdrawal amount, not the fee.
Bithumb's own table shows the Bitcoin withdrawal fee at 0.0002 BTC, five times lower than the number in circulation.
Two further details from the same table decide more of your cost than the headline rate does.
Network choice matters more than platform choice on stablecoins, because USDT costs nothing to withdraw over Tron and 4 USDT over Ethereum.
And from 20 July 2026, Bithumb applies a percentage-based withdrawal fee of 1% of the withdrawal amount to a named list of assets published on its help centre.
On a $1,000 withdrawal of an asset on that list, that is $10 against nothing for USDT sent over Tron.
Check the asset and the network before you send, not after.

Is Bithumb Safe? The 2025 to 2028 Record, Without Spin

Three separate threads run through Bithumb's recent record, and conflating them produces a worse picture than reading them apart.

The USDT Market

Bithumb opened a USDT market in beta on 22 September 2025, sharing an order book with an overseas venue to bring in international liquidity.
Korea's Financial Intelligence Unit opened a review on 1 October 2025.
Whatever the merits on either side, Bithumb's one attempt at an internationally quoted market lasted about two months.

The FIU Fine and the Six-Month Suspension

In March 2026 the Financial Intelligence Unit found approximately 6.65 million alleged breaches of Korea's specific financial information law, split between customer verification failures and unblocked transactions with unregistered operators.
Bithumb filed an administrative lawsuit and applied for a stay, and on 30 April 2026 the Seoul Administrative Court granted it, leaving the suspension unenforced pending a final ruling.
No final judgment had been reported as of 4 September 2026.
Context matters here, because the same enforcement wave reached Upbit's operator Dunamu as well as Coinone and Korbit.
This is an industry-wide supervisory push rather than a single-platform problem.

The 620,000 BTC Credit Error

On 6 February 2026 Bithumb ran a promotional draw intended to pay several hundred customers small won-denominated rewards.
The balances exceeded Bithumb's actual Bitcoin holdings, which is a reminder that an exchange ledger and on-chain reserves are different things.
Bithumb froze the affected accounts within about 40 minutes and recovered 618,212 BTC.
Roughly 1,788 BTC had been sold before the freeze, and the company covered the shortfall itself and reimbursed affected sellers at 110% of their losses.
Worth knowing before this reads as unique to Bithumb: the MEXC User Agreement contains an equivalent clause reserving the right to correct handling errors and requiring users to return digital assets received in excess.
Both platforms carry that term because both run an internal ledger that can be entered incorrectly.

Which Platform Fits Which Trader

You found a token through a Korean listing and want to trade it.
MEXC is the answer in this comparison, because the token is far more likely to be among 1,627 listings, it will be quoted in USDT, and a perpetual often exists alongside the spot pair.
Open an account, start with a small position, and check the depth on the specific pair you care about before sizing up.
You place mostly resting limit orders.
MEXC, because 0.0000% maker has no renewal step attached and Bithumb gives no maker discount at all.
You are a high-turnover taker who never forgets an admin task.
Bithumb's applied 0.04% is genuinely cheaper than our standard rate, and enabling MX deduction is what brings us level.
You want a licensed venue above all else.
MEXC holds no comprehensive national licence of the kind Bithumb holds in Korea, and if that is your deciding factor you should choose a platform licensed in your own jurisdiction.
You are a Korean resident.
Your options are the domestically registered exchanges, and this article does not make a recommendation among them.
You found something called Bithumb Global.
That was a separately incorporated Seychelles entity launched in 2019, later renamed BitGlobal, and major data platforms no longer track it as an active venue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Bithumb outside South Korea?
In practice, no.
Registration requires Korean residency documentation and a real-name account at the partner bank, which non-residents cannot obtain.

What are Bithumb's actual trading fees?
The Korean won market standard rate is 0.25% for both maker and taker orders.
Applying for the lowest-fee programme reduces that to 0.04% for 30 days, after which it reverts.

Which is cheaper, MEXC or Bithumb?
MEXC on maker orders at 0.0000%, and Bithumb on taker orders at 0.04% while its application is live.

Does Bithumb offer futures or margin trading?
No, Bithumb lists no futures products and CoinGecko records margin trading as unavailable.
Hedging or shorting requires a second account elsewhere.

Is Bithumb Global the same as Bithumb?
No, Bithumb Global was a separate Seychelles entity launched in 2019 and later renamed BitGlobal.
Major data platforms no longer track it as active.

What is Bithumb's Bitcoin withdrawal fee?
Bithumb's own table shows 0.0002 BTC, while 0.001 BTC is the minimum withdrawal amount.
Many third-party pages still quote the minimum as though it were the fee.

How many coins does Bithumb list compared with MEXC?
Bithumb's listings are quoted almost entirely in Korean won.

Is Bithumb safe after the 2026 fine and the credit error?
Bithumb recovered 99.7% of the mistaken credit and covered the remainder itself, and it won a court stay against the suspension pending a final ruling.
Neither matter is fully closed.

Is MEXC available in South Korea?
MEXC is not registered with the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit and offers no Korean won rail, and its app is not available in Korean app stores.
Korean residents should use a domestically registered exchange.

Risk and Regulatory Notice

MEXC is not registered as a virtual asset service provider in South Korea and offers no Korean won deposit or withdrawal rail.
MEXC's app is not available in Korean app stores, and the reachability of a website is not registration.
Nothing in this article is a recommendation for Korean residents to use an unregistered platform.
MEXC holds no tier-one licence in any jurisdiction, and regulators in several countries have published warnings stating that it is not authorised to offer crypto services in their markets.
MEXC does not serve residents of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada or the EEA, and readers there should confirm their status in the MEXC User Agreement and on our restricted countries page.
Perpetual futures carry leverage and can lose more than the initial margin, and newly listed small-capitalisation tokens are volatile and can become illiquid without warning, as our guide to futures trading risks explains.
Fee schedules, listing counts and withdrawal charges on both platforms change without notice, and all figures here reflect a single retrieval date.

Key Takea
