The SEI token is the native utility and governance asset of the Sei Network, an integrated Layer-1 blockchain designed for the high-speed exchange of digital assets. The tokenomics are structured to incentivize network security, support ecosystem growth, and facilitate decentralized governance.

Issuance and Supply Mechanism

The SEI token has a maximum supply capped at 10,000,000,000 (10 billion) tokens. It was launched alongside the Sei Pacific-1 mainnet on August 16, 2023.

The network utilizes an inflationary mechanism to fund staking rewards after the initial funding phase from the ecosystem reserve is exhausted. This ensures long-term economic viability for validators and stakers. Additionally, the proposed Sei Giga upgrade suggests an epoch-based reward system to pool and distribute rewards, reducing variance compared to traditional block-by-block rewards.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial distribution of the 10 billion SEI tokens was divided among five primary categories to balance the interests of the community, investors, and the core development team:

The Ecosystem Reserve is further subdivided to fund several critical areas:

• Staking Rewards: Incentives for validators and delegators.
• Ecosystem Initiatives: Grants and incentives for contributors, builders, and projects.
• Airdrops and Incentives: 3% of the total supply was specifically allocated to "Season 1" rewards for early and active users.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The SEI token serves multiple core functions within the network:

• Network Fees: Used to settle transaction fees on the blockchain. Users can also pay a "tip" to validators to prioritize their transactions.
• DPoS Staking: Holders can delegate tokens to validators or run their own validator nodes to secure the network. Only the top 39 validators by total stake (self-bonded plus delegated) are considered "active" and eligible for rewards.
• Governance: Staked SEI grants holders voting power on protocol parameters, such as minting distributions, increasing the validator set, or implementing trading fees.
• Native Collateral: SEI can be used as liquidity or collateral for decentralized applications (dApps) built on the network.
• Trading Fees: Exchanges built on the Sei blockchain may utilize SEI for transaction fees.

Incentives and Penalties:

• Staking Rewards: As of early 2024, the advertised staking APR was approximately 4.46%.
• Slashing: To ensure network integrity, validators can face "slashing" penalties for misbehavior (e.g., double-signing or liveness violations), which results in a portion of their staked tokens being burned.

Locking and Unlocking Mechanism

Sei employs a multi-year vesting schedule to manage the release of tokens into the circulating supply and minimize inflationary shocks.

The total supply is scheduled to be fully unlocked by August 2031.

• Staking Unbonding: For users who choose to unstake their SEI, there is a 21-day (three-week) unbonding period during which the assets remain locked and do not earn rewards.
• Vesting Milestones: Significant increases in circulating supply began in late 2024 and are expected to continue through 2025 as the 1-year cliffs for the Team and Private Sale Investors expire. Monthly unlocks during these peak periods can reach between 150 million and 200 million tokens.
