A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck offshore of Davao Oriental on Monday afternoon, with intensities reported in over 20 areas, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The tremor occurred at exactly 5:18 p.m., with its epicenter located offshore, about 113 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, PHIVOLCS said in its Earthquake Information No. 2.
It occurred at a depth of 94 kilometers and was tectonic in origin, generated by movement along the Philippine Trench.
Reported intensities were recorded in 24 areas, with the highest intensity, Intensity V, felt in Governor Generoso and Jose Abad Santos.
Intensity IV was felt in nine areas, including Alabel, Glan, Kiamba, and Malapatan in Sarangani; Koronadal City, Tampakan, and Tupi in South Cotabato; General Santos City; and Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat.
Meanwhile, Intensity III was reported in six areas: Mati City in Davao Oriental, along with Banga, Norala, Polomolok, Surallah, and T’Boli in South Cotabato.
A milder Intensity II was felt in five areas, namely Davao City; and Kidapawan City, M’lang, Matalam, and President Roxas in Cotabato.
Finally, the lowest level, Intensity I, was recorded in two areas: Carmen, Cotabato and Tandag City in Surigao del Sur.
PHIVOLCS said no damage is expected from the quake, but aftershocks are likely.
The bureau also clarified that the tremor is unrelated to the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck offshore Sarangani exactly a week ago.
