In simple terms, Harmony treats the blockchain as a large transaction ledger, but it avoids forcing a single set of participants to handle every update in order. The protocol divides the ledger into multiple shards, allowing separate validator groups to process activity in parallel, while still keeping the overall system synchronized and secure. Consensus within each shard is achieved through Fast Byzantine Fault Tolerance (FBFT), which functions like a highly efficient voting process that enables validators to quickly finalize what is recorded. To reduce the risk of gaming the system, Harmony uses a specialized random number generator that cannot be predicted or manipulated. Communication across shards is supported by Kademlia, a routing method that helps messages travel efficiently rather than taking an inefficient broadcast path. For reliability and speed, Harmony also incorporates erasure coding, enabling the network to reconstruct missing data when needed. Harmony relies on the ONE token to align incentives and maintain security across the network. Anyone who wants to validate transactions must stake ONE tokens, meaning they lock up tokens to gain the right to participate in validation. A larger stake provides greater voting influence, but the system includes safeguards intended to limit the chance that any single actor or coordinated group can gain too much control. The minimum stake requirement has been adjusted to promote wider participation while still supporting network security. Validators who carry out their responsibilities properly can earn rewards that include newly issued tokens as well as transaction fees. If validators attempt dishonest behavior or fail to perform correctly, they risk losing a portion of the tokens they have staked. The design also includes defenses against long-range attacks, adding measures that prevent old keys from being used to manufacture false transaction histories. Over time, ONE has also expanded in utility to support DeFi activity on Harmony, including lending, borrowing, and yield farming protocols built on the network.
