Tokenomics de XRP (XRP)

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is a decentralized, blockchain-based protocol designed for fast, energy-efficient cross-border payments and settlement. Its native token, XRP, serves as the primary utility asset within this ecosystem. Unlike many other blockchains, XRP was not mined; its entire supply was created at the network's inception in 2012.

Issuance Mechanism

XRP has a fixed total supply of 100,000,000,000 (100 billion) tokens. These were pre-mined at the launch of the XRP Ledger. No additional XRP can ever be created, making the total supply capped.

The supply dynamics are influenced by two primary forces:

• Inflationary Pressure: Driven by the programmatic release of tokens from escrow accounts held by Ripple.
• Deflationary Pressure: Driven by a burn mechanism where all transaction fees (gas fees) are permanently destroyed (burned) by the network rather than being paid to validators.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial 100 billion XRP tokens were distributed as follows:

• Ripple Labs: Received 80 billion XRP (80%) to support the ongoing development, code contributions, and expansion of the ecosystem.
• Founding Team: Received 20 billion XRP (20%). This allocation was further divided among the three founders:
  • Chris Larsen: 9.5 billion XRP (47.5% of the founders' share).
  • Arthur Britto: 9.5 billion XRP (47.5% of the founders' share).
  • Jed McCaleb: 1 billion XRP (5% of the founders' share).

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

XRP functions as a multi-purpose utility token within the XRPL:

• Medium of Exchange: Used for peer-to-peer transfers and institutional settlements.
• Bridge Currency: Facilitates On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) by acting as an intermediary between different fiat currencies, reducing the need for pre-funded nostro accounts.
• Transaction Fees: All fees on the XRPL are paid in XRP and subsequently burned.
• Anti-Spam (Reserves): To prevent Sybil attacks and network bloat, the XRPL requires minimum reserves:
  • Base Reserve: 10 XRP to create and maintain a wallet address.
  • Owner Reserve: 2 XRP for each "Trust Line" or object (like an NFT or Issued Currency) owned by an account.
• DEX Liquidity: XRP is used in the native Central Limit Order Book (CLOB) and Automated Market Maker (AMM) for auto-bridging currency pairs.

Incentives: Unlike Proof-of-Stake (PoS) networks, the XRPL does not distribute rewards or transaction fees to its validators. Validators are primarily incentivized by the desire to support network decentralization and reliability. However, Ripple has historically operated incentive programs for partner exchanges and market makers to increase liquidity and tighten spreads.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

To ensure a predictable supply and prevent market flooding, Ripple implemented a formal escrow system in 2017.

Escrow Locking

Ripple placed 55 billion XRP into a series of escrow contracts. These contracts are programmatically designed to release a set amount of tokens over time.

Unlocking Schedule

• Monthly Release: Exactly 1 billion XRP is released from escrow on the first day of each month.
• Re-Escrowing: Any portion of the 1 billion XRP that Ripple does not spend or distribute during that month is placed back into a new escrow contract. These re-escrowed tokens are scheduled to be released in the first month where no other escrow release is currently planned.
• Duration: This monthly cycle will continue until the remaining escrowed supply (approximately 39–40 billion XRP as of late 2024) becomes liquid.

Founder Lockups

The 20 billion XRP given to the founders was also subject to various individual lockup agreements to manage their distribution into the circulating supply.
