Learn forex CFD trading with practical EUR/USD and USD/JPY examples. Calculate lots, pip values and profit or loss, then apply the numbers on MEXC.

Forex CFD trading lets you trade changes in a currency pair without taking delivery of the currencies. The practical question is how a quoted exchange-rate move becomes a gain or loss in your account.

To answer it, connect four figures: contract size, quantity in lots, price movement in pips, and the currency in which the result is calculated. A 0.10-lot EUR/USD position and a 0.10-lot USD/JPY position can have different dollar values per pip.

The examples below use hypothetical prices for calculation only. They are not live quotes, forecasts or trading signals.

Understand What the Currency Pair Represents

In EUR/USD, EUR is the base currency and USD is the quote currency. A hypothetical price of 1.1000 means one euro is worth 1.10 US dollars.

Buying the CFD creates long exposure to the euro relative to the dollar. Selling creates short exposure. A long position gains from a sufficient rise in EUR/USD; a short position gains from a sufficient fall, after accounting for execution prices and charges.

This also answers a common “CFD vs forex” question: forex describes the currency market, while a CFD describes the contract used to trade its price movements. They are not two separate asset classes.

A deliverable currency exchange changes the currencies you hold. A forex CFD creates a derivative position whose price difference is settled under the account rules. Buying an EUR/USD CFD does not create a euro balance that you can withdraw or spend.

Convert Forex CFD Lots Into Currency Units

Start with the contract specification, rather than the amount of collateral required to open the trade.

The MEXC EURUSD CFD trading page, checked on November 2, 2026, displayed a contract size of 100,000, a minimum order size of 0.01 lot and a minimum quantity step of 0.01 lot.

For that contract:

  • 1.00 lot represents 100,000 euros of base-currency exposure.
  • 0.10 lot represents 10,000 euros.
  • 0.01 lot represents 1,000 euros.

The calculation is:

Base-currency exposure = lots × contract size

At a hypothetical EUR/USD price of 1.1000, 0.10 lot therefore represents 10,000 euros, worth approximately $11,000. The number entered in the quantity field is a lot quantity; entering 0.10 does not mean trading ten cents or $100.

Margin is the collateral supporting that exposure. Its calculation and the account’s liquidation conditions are covered in CFD Margin and Leverage Explained: Formulas & Examples. Here, the important input for price sensitivity is the number of currency units represented by the position.

Calculate the Value of One Pip

For EUR/USD, one conventional pip is 0.0001. A move from 1.1000 to 1.1010 is ten pips.

For a straightforward forex CFD:

Pip value in the quote currency = lots × contract size × pip size

Using the verified EURUSD contract size:

  • 1.00 lot: 1.00 × 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10 per pip.
  • 0.10 lot: 0.10 × 100,000 × 0.0001 = $1 per pip.
  • 0.01 lot: 0.01 × 100,000 × 0.0001 = $0.10 per pip.

These values are in dollars because USD is the quote currency.

Keep Pips Separate From Displayed Points

A five-decimal EUR/USD quote can move from 1.10000 to 1.10001. That difference is 0.00001, or one-tenth of a conventional pip.

A platform field expressed in points may therefore use a different unit from a strategy described in pips. On a five-decimal quote, a 20-pip distance corresponds to 200 points when one point is 0.00001.

MetaTrader 5’s contract specifications distinguish decimal digits, points and minimum tick size. Check the unit used by the particular order field before entering a stop distance. If the field accepts a price, enter and verify the intended price level rather than assuming it accepts pips.

Follow One EUR/USD CFD Trade From Entry to Exit

Assume a contract size of 100,000 and a quantity of 0.10 lot. This gives exposure to 10,000 euros.

For this hypothetical example, the executable prices at entry are:

  • Buy price, or Ask: 1.1002.
  • Sell price, or Bid: 1.1000.

The spread is 0.0002, equivalent to two pips.

Open the Long Position at the Buy Price

Suppose the buy order fills at 1.1002.

If the position could immediately be closed at an unchanged Bid of 1.1000, its price-based result would be:

(1.1000 − 1.1002) × 10,000 = −$2

That initial loss reflects the spread. It can appear even when the market has not moved after entry.

For a long position, use:

Price-based P&L = (closing sell price − opening buy price) × currency units

Calculate a Profitable Exit

Suppose the position later closes at a Bid of 1.1032.

(1.1032 − 1.1002) × 10,000 = $30

The executed entry-to-exit difference is 30 pips, worth $1 each.

Measuring from the original Bid of 1.1000 to the closing Bid of 1.1032 would show a 32-pip chart move. Applying that entire move to the trade would overstate its result by $2 because the position opened at the Ask.

The $30 result is before separate commissions and any swap or other account adjustments.

Calculate the Planned Loss at a Stop Price

Now assume the intended stop exit is 1.0982.

If the position closes at exactly that price:

(1.0982 − 1.1002) × 10,000 = −$20

The distance from the entry fill is 20 pips. This is a price-based loss estimate, not a guaranteed maximum loss: the actual fill can be worse during a gap or fast market, and separate charges can increase the account loss.

The same calculation at 0.01 lot would produce a $2 price-based loss. Changing the lot quantity changes the cash sensitivity; it does not make the chosen stop price more likely to hold.

Reverse the Calculation for a Short Position

For a short position, use:

Price-based P&L = (opening sell price − closing buy price) × currency units

A separate hypothetical short of 0.10 lot, opened at a Bid of 1.1000 and closed at an Ask of 1.0975, produces:

(1.1000 − 1.0975) × 10,000 = $25

The price used to close a short is the buy price. Using a lower sell quote instead would overstate the profit.

Recalculate When USD Is Not the Quote Currency

The MEXC USDJPY CFD trading page, also checked on November 2, 2026, displayed a contract size of 100,000. Here, those units are US dollars, and the quoted exchange rate is Japanese yen per dollar.

For USD/JPY, one conventional pip is 0.01. At 0.10 lot:

Pip value = 0.10 × 100,000 × 0.01 = ¥100 per pip

At a hypothetical conversion rate of ¥150 per dollar, that is approximately $0.67 per pip. It is not the $1-per-pip value calculated for 0.10 lot of EUR/USD.

Consider a hypothetical 0.10-lot USD/JPY short:

  • Opening sell fill: 150.000.
  • Closing buy fill: 149.700.
  • Position size: 10,000 US dollars.

The price-based profit is:

(150.000 − 149.700) × 10,000 = ¥3,000

Using 149.700 solely as an illustrative yen-to-dollar conversion rate:

¥3,000 ÷ 149.700 ≈ $20.04

The account result depends on the platform’s applicable conversion rate and separate charges. Do not treat this illustrative conversion as a promise of the exact settlement amount.

MEXC’s view is that a shared settlement currency should not be mistaken for a shared risk unit. Two contracts reported in USDx can still have different cash sensitivity per pip. Identify the quote currency and convert the result before comparing the sizes of two forex trades.

Apply These Forex CFD Trading Calculations on MEXC

The MEXC CFD product page explains that eligible users can activate a CFD account and transfer USDT from Spot. The transferred amount converts 1:1 into USDx, the internal unit used for CFD margin and settlement. Funds transferred back to Spot convert into USDT at the same ratio.

That account mechanism does not change the currency pair’s contract size or quote currency.

For an intended forex CFD order:

  1. Select the exact CFD symbol and open its Info section. Read contract size, minimum order quantity and quantity step.
  2. Convert the proposed lots into base-currency units and calculate the cash value of a pip.
  3. Choose the order type and direction. Use the expected buy or sell execution price in the P&L calculation, then recalculate from the actual fill.
  4. If using TP/SL, verify whether the fields accept prices or distances. Check that the levels were accepted and attached to the intended position.
  5. Review available CFD funds, required margin and the next session break. After execution, confirm the filled quantity and price in the position record.

Forex CFDs have contract-specific sessions. Use CFD Trading Hours: Forex, Gold, Oil and Indices to interpret the schedule and its timezone before planning an entry or exit.

Close the Existing Position Explicitly

MEXC’s CFD FAQ states that long and short positions can remain independent on the same instrument.

Consequently, opening a new sell position should not be treated as an automatic way to close an existing buy position. You could finish with both positions still open.

Select the position you intend to exit and use its close function. MetaTrader 5’s hedging-account instructions likewise require an explicit Close Position action. After execution, verify that the intended position has disappeared or that its remaining quantity matches the partial close.

Reconcile the Result Without Deducting the Spread Twice

The EUR/USD long example used an actual buy fill and an actual sell fill. Its $30 price-based profit already reflects the difference between those execution prices.

Subtracting another estimated spread charge from that result would count the spread again.

Then reconcile separate items, such as commissions and swap debits or credits, against the transaction history. Check whether the displayed P&L figure already includes an item before adjusting it manually.

FAQ

Why Might a 0.015-Lot Forex CFD Order Be Rejected?

A valid quantity must meet both the minimum size and the permitted step. Under the EURUSD specification checked for this article, the minimum and step were both 0.01 lot. Quantities such as 0.01, 0.02 and 0.03 fit that increment; 0.015 does not. Confirm the current specification for the exact symbol.

Why Can a Stop Trigger When the Chart Seems Not to Have Reached It?

The chart may show a different side of the quote from the one relevant to the exit. A short position closes through a buy, so the Ask matters even if the visible chart is based on Bid. Check the chart basis, historical quotes and the execution record when reviewing a disputed level.

Is Forex CFD Trading With USDT the Same as Trading EUR/USDT?

No. EUR/USD identifies a euro-versus-US-dollar reference rate. A product labelled EUR/USDT may have a different contract structure, settlement mechanism, quantity unit and trading schedule. Using USDT to transfer funds into a CFD account does not rename its underlying EUR/USD contract.

Do Two Forex CFD Positions Diversify My Currency Exposure?

They can share the same currency driver. For example, a long EUR/USD position and a short USD/JPY position both have exposure that can benefit from dollar weakness, although the euro and yen also have their own drivers. Review the combined currency exposure rather than counting the number of different symbols.

Risk Warning

Forex CFDs are leveraged derivatives. Exchange-rate changes, conversion rates, spreads and trading charges affect account results. Gaps or slippage can cause losses beyond a planned stop estimate, and insufficient margin can trigger forced closure. The numerical examples are educational and do not establish a profitable strategy. Confirm current specifications and product availability for your account and location.
