Issuance Mechanism

Algorand employs a deflationary issuance model with a fixed maximum supply of 10 billion ALGO tokens. These tokens were minted at genesis and are introduced into circulation through a controlled release schedule to manage inflation and ensure long-term economic stability.

• Capped Supply: The 10 billion token limit is designed to maintain scarcity.
• Gradual Release: Tokens are distributed progressively through various programs, including ecosystem support, node-running grants, and governance rewards.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial 10 billion ALGO supply was distributed across several key stakeholder groups and incentive pools. As of late 2024, approximately 100% of the total supply has been unlocked, though significant portions remain held by the Foundation for ongoing ecosystem development.

• Staking Rewards (New): Introduced in early 2025, a new staking rewards system distributes real-time rewards to validators who successfully propose blocks, further incentivizing node operation.
• Ecosystem Grants: The Algorand Foundation provides grants to developers and projects building on the network to foster innovation.

Locking Mechanism

Algorand's PPoS consensus is unique because it does not require tokens to be locked or bonded for basic network participation. This ensures that assets remain liquid and can be spent at any time.

However, specific programs do involve commitment:

• Governance Commitment: To earn governance rewards, users must commit a specific amount of ALGO for a 90-day (3-month) period. While the tokens are not technically "locked" in a smart contract (they remain in the user's wallet), the user must maintain a balance above their committed amount to remain eligible for rewards.
• Vesting for Early Backers: Early relay node runners and certain investors were subject to vesting schedules, including a "Price KPI" mechanism where vesting accelerated during periods of significant price increases.

Unlocking Time and Schedule

The majority of the ALGO supply has already entered the market. As of late 2024, the network reached a milestone where 100% of the 10 billion tokens are considered unlocked from their original vesting schedules.

Current Release Dynamics

Despite the full unlock of the total supply, the network continues to see a consistent daily release of tokens from Foundation-controlled wallets into the circulating supply to fund rewards and ecosystem growth.

• Daily Unlock Rate: Recent data indicates a consistent daily unlock of approximately 527,395 ALGO.
• Circulating Impact: This daily release represents a marginal impact of roughly 0.01% on the current circulating supply.
• Historical Context: In early 2024, the network underwent a significant 31-day unlock period that released 2.29 million ALGO daily to reach the final stages of its distribution plan.

The transition from a high-inflation early phase to a fully unlocked state marks Algorand's shift toward a more mature economic phase, where the focus is on fee-based sustainability and governance-driven distribution.
