CASE STUDY | How a Bitcoin Holder Recovered 5 BTC from an 11-Year Old Wallet Using Anthropic Claude AI

A Bitcoin holder has recovered access to 5 bitcoin worth roughly $400,000 after using Anthropic’s Claude artificial intelligence (AI) model to help unlock a wallet that had been inaccessible for more than 11 years.

The user, identified on X as ‘cprkrn,’ said the wallet had been locked since around 2014 or 2015 after he changed the password while in college and later forgot it. The bitcoin stash, untouched for years, became increasingly valuable as the cryptocurrency surged above $100,000 earlier this year before pulling back.

According to posts reviewed by crypto news outlets, the user uploaded files from an old computer, including wallet backups and notes, into Claude, which helped identify an older wallet file and diagnose an issue with the open-source recovery tool btcrecover.

“Last ditch effort dumped my whole college computer into Claude. It found an OLD wallet file that the pneumonic successfully decrypted,” posted cprkrn.

The AI model reportedly identified that the tool was processing a shared encryption key incorrectly, corrected the decryption logic and helped extract the wallet’s private keys, allowing the owner to regain access to the funds.

Screenshots posted online showed the recovered wallet balance alongside messages generated by Claude indicating the keys had been successfully decrypted. The user said previous recovery attempts using commercial services had failed and cost him hundreds of dollars.

The episode drew widespread attention across the cryptocurrency industry where stories of lost bitcoin wallets have become part of the sector’s folklore. One of the most famous cases involves Welsh IT worker James Howells, who has spent years trying to recover a hard drive believed to contain thousands of bitcoin accidentally discarded in a landfill.

The recovery also highlighted growing interest in using generative AI systems for specialized technical tasks, including software debugging, digital forensics and legacy system recovery.
