MAGA is having another meltdown over a Hollywood casting choice, this time concerning an adaptation of a classic cartoon.
The latest meltdown is sparked by news that Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson will star as Betty Boop in a live-action film, according to reporting by the Daily Beast.

MAGA accounts called it "race swapping," though Brunson's defenders noted her resemblance to Betty Boop, the iconic, big-eyed cartoon character from the early 20th century.
"There is only one reason to bring back an iconic piece of Americana just to race swap it like this," wrote right-wing influencer Matt Walsh on X. "Even a faithful Betty Boop reboot probably wouldn't sell many tickets. A race-swapped Betty Boop has absolutely no chance of success. But they do it anyway out of spite."
Other MAGA accounts cried out that Hollywood was "race-rage baiting to no end with their woke DEI antics" and that it needs to "STOP replacing WHITE people," according to posts shared by the Daily Beast.
Mark Fleischer, the grandson of Betty Boop's creator, Max Fleischer, is working with Brunson on the adaptation, the Daily Beast reported. Although Fleischer never said the character was based on a single person, the "closest inspiration" was Black jazz singer Esther Jones, according to the Daily Beast and 1934 reporting by the New York Times.
